Applied for Con-Way Freight, chances of getting hired?

    Hello everyone, been reading these forums for sometime now but have only made a few posts. So, I applied for CWF the other night as they had a job listing as a truck driver trainee in San Bernardino (I'm guessing that means Fontana)

    My question is what are my chances of getting hired, I meet all the requirements for this trainee position; class A CDL, graduate from an accredited driving school, 22 years old, HazMat, double/triples, spotless driving/criminal record, drug free, and have "LESS THAN 12 months of entry level driving experience," I was with an OTR company for about a month that I completed training with. I read through the job description and in the application itself and that last one isn't a typo. The only thing on I don't have is forklift experience, the requirements say "Forklift experience preferred," I'd be more than willing to learn how to operate a forklift, would they train me for this? Would not having such experience be a deal killer?

    I'm very eager to get a local driving job, I've of course had trouble finding a company that will train newbies. This one with CWF seems perfect to me. Also I was wondering if just an online app would be enough, I'd be happy to make some calls I just don't know who to call :biggrin_25525:.

    I thank anyone who took the time to read my post and can give me some helpful advice.

    Do what I did when I worked for CWF. Give it about a week or two then call the terminal and ask about your application. I was in the exact same boat as you as I was 22 last year when I got hired, although I did not go OTR. They will train you on a forklift and it's very easy and will even certify you on it. You will a part-time dock worker while in the class and the class is about 3-4 months long every day during week. They could however get you out sooner since you got everything like they did to me. Good luck with everything and if you have any questions about the class you can ask me. Questions about the company ask century class or jakebrake here on the forum

    It all`depends on how you present yourself to the personnel manager. Chances look pretty good if i say so. Like ACH said, wait a week and call or send an email, it works. And dont worry about forklift experience. Never used one before conway now im a forklift ninja..lol.
    ill add more later. after chaining up twice over donner last night and bumping my 16 hr rule. meh tired

    Thank you guys for the helpful posts, I'll wait and call. I think I found the number and address for their Fontana terminal, if I wanted to email someone there how would I go about finding out who that person might be?

    e-mail I'm not sure about but look up the local phone number and ask about your application. This way it shows interest in the job. When I applied to CWF I did the same thing and the guy offered me an interview just because I seemed eager. Sometimes it takes a bit for them to call. IT took ABF about a month, took Estes four months to call me and YRC about 3 weeks.

    Dont worry about forklifts, they WILL train you and certify it. Its very easy to learn. Do you know how big the terminal is? My old one was 60 doors, some of the big FAC's were 100+ doors.

    Yeah I'll probably call early next week and ask about my application. I'm not sure how many doors the terminal has exactly, if you search google maps for "con-way freight fontana, ca" you should get a satellite picture of it on Marlay Avenue, it looks decent sized not sure though if it's considered big or small compared to other CWF terminals.

    Ill find out tonight what class fontana is, but from the google maps shot, the place is huge and is guaranteed to be at least a class 2 or class 1 FAC.

    Thank you for the link, I'll call monday or tuesday as it will have been about a week since I applied. I'll keep you guys posted when I find out more. If I do get accepted into training then I'll probably have a few questions regarding how their process works and how they do things. Thanks again.

    the account executives are the sales people so your best bet is to get ahold of HR or the terminal manager

    yea i agree it does look quite big... You will do better at a bigger terminal than a smaller one like the one i worked at. You'll be able to get more choices, like Day line-haul(after a long time being there) night line-haul and P/D, even working as a switcher
