not sure about trucks but most cars can run without a battery installed. everything is powered by the alternator once its up and running. battery just acts as a big capacitor of sorts to smooth out any voltage spikes.

True. But modern engines are regulated through the engine computer. Cut power to that, it kills it.

He was sitting on the catwalk. Easy to reach and grab a line inside the frame rail. Hard to break it though.

Heck, even if it was my own truck, or a fancy show truck, I wouldn't hop on the back. Your gambling with your life for nothing but some metal and rubber. That is just one reason why you carry insurance. If you plan to jump on your moving truck once it's stolen, don't bother paying for insurance on the truck.
If he had a knife on him he could have cut a brake line going to a brake pod. The time it takes for the entire air supply to drain down and how slow they were going, he would not have been injured by a sudden stop or anything. -
