I've been on this site reading and learning for a couple months now and I just want to say thank you for all the great advice from all of you! I've been wanting to be a truck driver since the first time I seen a big rig truckin' down the road and my dream is finally coming true. I know it's not all unicorns and rainbows but I've been doing commercial floor covering for a couple years now and I could really use a change of pace. I have a lot of truckers in my family so I'm fully aware of what the job entails. I figured it would be nice of me to give back so I'm going to give a day to day report of my trucking school experience. I've heard the davidson county community college is a great place for training and it's only about $1200 including books and everything for about 380 hours of training.
Thanks for reading and I hope you all are having a great day and safe trucking!

Well week one is done now and it's been a blast to say the least. they threw us in trucks on the second day and by the 3rd day we were double clutching and getting up to 6th gear. 3 days of driving and 2 days of classroom and I've already driven 5 different trucks! We've practiced a road course with tight corners, tight curves and a tight roadway and by the second day I scored perfect on that exercise. We also did a straight backing exercise with a day cab truck and a 25ft trailer which was my first time driving anything with a trailer, and by the 4th time backing I had it in the middle and within 3 inches of the wall we backed it up to. The last exercise was coupling and uncoupling a similar truck with the same size trailer, just practicing the steps in order and backing up straight and checking all the equipment, hooking up airlines and all that good stuff. Monday We day the 3 axle trucks out with the 53 foot trailers out on the road and thru town!!!! I'm a little nervous but the trainers are great so it will be a good experience I'm sure. 4th day driving and we're taking the big guns out on the town, this school really doesn't waste any time and it's 2 months long. I'll keep ya'll updated as time goes by but so far its been a great time and the instructors are a hoot.
