They also start down south and work their way north over the summer.

It's not bad. You pull into the field at the edge and wait for the tractor with the grain cart to bring it over to you. Some fields you can't get into so you sit on the road. A bit of gravel and you're back on the state highway to the elevator and back.

A lot of these guys can afford nicer equipment than you get with OTR companies too.

There's a guy north of me about 4 miles. He heads south in April. 80% of his crew is from Europe because he can't get people from the area to work hard enough.

He runs 8 huge 36 foot header combines. I think he got one last year that's 40 feet.

And the trucks to support them.

Some of them do run hard hours. The guy I ran with liked to get up before dawn and go until he couldn't keep the combine running straight anymore. That was usually around 12-1am. The guy we had from South Africa could run for days at a time since he was used to it (no DOT down there), and I caught cat naps all day to keep up. Had some fun that summer.

I am sure its better than what I envisioned, it truly has to be....I have hauled grain and beets in some trucks that were well to be honest scary to drive. But I suppose with anything specialized like that they don't want to drive trucks from state to state trying to patch them together to get to the next job. Also doing the hauling I have done in the field (admittedly not much) I had to drive next to the lifter (beets) and next to the combine. In some not so nicely groomed fields.
