I finally got a hold of the test facility. They told me that if the vehicle has air brakes, and has a more than 26k capacity, it is OK to have a suitable electric brake trailer and I will not have tractor/trailer or air brake restriction. Also, they said, the trans (automatic or not) does not matter.

Thats the way it is here in MN....many places rent out very small flatbed trucks with airbrakes and auto transmissions with short bobcat style trailers.
One testing facility actually recommends you do not use a full size tractor and trailer because of the size of the streets on the course. -
Best regardsRoadmedic Thanks this. -
Still have never seen them do this.
Does not affect me, I have the full thing and all endorsements, except let the hazmat go again. -
They are incorrect as the auto transmission does cause a restriction.
383.95 (c) Manual transmission. (1) If an applicant performs the skills test in a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission, the State must indicate on the CDL, if issued, that the person is restricted from operating a CMV equipped with a manual transmission.
But on the other hand if they do not put the restriction on, I guess that's between them and the feds and no skin off of your nose.
Best regards. -
It is very odd that there are restrictions in the FMCSA Regs that are not in forced at the state level. MN does not indicate either restriction on their license, I tested with an Auto and a pintle.

Actually this is the exact truck I used:
Class A with out airbrakes:
As you can see MN is way to relaxed on what you test in. IL may not be so easy going. -
If I did not care about the air brakes restriction, I could just test with my pickup truck and my 20,000 lbs trailer!
But, I think, I would rather spend $300 and test and get a unrestricted class A. -
ive known people that have both tested in autos and used 20 ton tags and a dump to get there license and are unrestricted, im pretty sure they got rid of those in the 90s.
