Hello all, new guy just about to finish my CDL training and thinking about going team driving with an old buddy. Question is how does one log team hours??? Must one driver drive his entire 11 hours before the second driver can come on duty or can they be split 5 on 5 off "sleeper"??? how does this work with the 14 hour rule??

You used to be able to do 5 on 5 off, but with the new logging rules you can't. I used to run team and we ran 10 on 10 off. When one is driving the other would normally be in the bunk, because if co driver is riding shotgun then they are 'ON duty NOT driving' and burning their 14.
That being said I know of at least one team that still runs 5on/5off, but they have to 'adjust' (LIE) on their logs to make it look legal.

Hey what's that teams name? I wonder if I know them :biggrin_2559:

No for real though, really a team is cheating just to run the split? Wow I never thought of them trying that. HMMM It is hard to prove teams are cheating but I have done it before, they sometimes get silly with the log:biggrin_255:
    Have a great night

So that means that team driving is impossible?
Would the co-driver (passenger seat) When not driving, Would have to
Log sleeper birth or on duty?

You can ONLY log sleeper berth time when your carcass is actually IN the sleeper.

Under the new definition of on-duty time (in effect 02/27/12) you can be off-duty in the passenger seat for up to 2 hours immediately before or after 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper. That way you get your 10 hours off.

All other time in the passenger seat while the vehicle is in operation would be on-duty/not driving time.

Always seemed silly to me. How many drivers need to be responsible at any given time? If the driver is responsible while he is on duty then by definition the other should be relieved of all duties hence Off DUTY.But SM is correct those are the regs. There is no team exception to the 14 hour clock.

There was a thread on here from a husband and Wife team whom got caught. Had some she was sick story(may or may not have been valid) that got some good fines, an OOS for both of them, and fired from their company.

The on duty provision is not just limited to team drivers ;) any driver can sit in the front seat up to 2 hrs before or after an 8 hr sleeper break and log it as off duty as to on duty not driving! They focus on team because it will Benefit them more!

    123456 and Tazz Thank this.

Actually, under the new definition of on-duty time, if the vehicle is parked and the driver is relieved of duty by the carrier, all time spent in the vehicle can be off-duty now. Not just 2 hours.

    123456 Thanks this.

Relieved of duty and the time must be spent "resting" in or on a parked vehicle.

    Best regards
