How in heck did you get it started ??? I ran out of fuel once and mine would not hit a lick until we pumped up the fuel.
Peace -
I had fuel stolen years ago and rolled to a stop at the top of an exit ramp. Right next to an abandoned gas station/ C store. Inside the open door was a 5 gallon red plastic can of old, really stale gasoline and an old pile of bottles of assorted engine and transmission oils. I emptied it all in the tanks- I figured about nine gallons of oils and gasoline- just enough to cover the pickup line in the tank. Got it started and at the next exit was a no name fuel stop.
In the military when some dummy put the wrong fuel in the tank you just idled the fuel off- until the engine ran out of fuel. Then just refill it (with the correct fuel) and drive off.Barca Thanks this. -
A little starting fluid goes a long way to getting it started after running out of fuel. Taking off and filling the filters makes it even easier.
Barca Thanks this. -
Just added some fuel turned the key and waited 60 seconds for fuel to flow and it started right away. Did the same thing as it was dying on me on my way to truck stop.

That was going to be next thing i was going to do but since it started every time after dying i didnt bother

I always get hysterical when I hear this (you may have picked up junk from the bottom when you ran low) LOL The fact of the matter is the pickup in the tank sucks from the same level (the bottom) whether its sucking from a full tank or an empty one...... The pickup dont drop as the fuel gets lower...LMAO

Ether does help if you run out of fuel and your in a hurry and don't want to pull your filters off, also CAT engines have the little plungers that can be of assistance.
We had guys where I work now use the plungers on a cat fuel filter housing for dipsticks, well at-least they thought they were dipsticks and yanked on them so hard they broke....idiots. -
You're lucky, you apparently have an electric fuel pump. Otherwise there is all kinds of fun involved with getting them re primed lol.
The truck may run like crud for a while. She might buck and hiccup until all the air gets worked out of the fuel lines through the heads and to the injectors, but she will be just fine. -
ISX engines all have an electric charge pump unless someone tells us different. Bad part of that is the pumps go bad and leak, air in and fuel out, but another thing is that you shouldn't use ether with them.
Another item is that any shut down of a diesel engine involves shutting off the fuel, technically not that much different than running out of fuel, no fuel and the engine doesn't run. Older ISX engines were notorious for shutting down due to a code, and not revealing the code, ask me how I know that.
If it's really still you can hear the pump run before you start it, and it starts better if you wait a little while key on before trying to start it. If you run it out, just key on and wait, key off and repeat a couple of times before trying to start it.
