Which company to pick?

What does he want to do? Flatbed is more work than reefer, which is more work than van.
If he went with Roehl, he could try reefer, and change if he didn't like it, all while staying with the same company. Or start with flatbed, and switch to a van.

 

Living in florida,

it is very important to consider the problem of hometime.

That will have a large impact on your decision.

His first driving job will either make him, or break him.

Trans Am is reefer with 99% no touch freight.

More money in flatbeds, though.

 

I see a couple tmc trucks near my home every weekend. I hear they do ok for a starter outfit. I know Davis express runs down your way a lot but they might require a couple years. They have no touch freight and start out in the mid $.40'a per mile. Plus get paid to wait also. Personally I would find an ltl company near your home and have him start on the bottom and work his way up. He'd be a happy man in about 5 years. Going ltl is the best decision I've ever made.

 

I would suggest Roehl, mainly for the reason that they are a good starter company, and that you can pull different types of trailers with them, I pull flat but have pulled van for them, I do try to avoid reefer though. ( prefer the day shift lol)

 

avoid tmc like the plague! they will run you into the ground,pretty trucks or not.im not a huge fan of reefers,but its nearly always no touch.flatbeds are good money wise but its best to do them while youre young,at my age i dont feel like holding onto a huge sail while on a load of lumber.just remember that no matter what,the DRIVER is responsible for his logs,truck,trailer,load etc...so if the DOT pulls you over at a chicken coop,and somethings amiss,its ultimately the DRIVERS fault,not the carriers,and the fine is coming out of YOUR pocket and they tend to be huge.. so research every aspect of the company.also remeber that 99% of companys need at least 1 to 2 years otr/trailer experience for insurance and peace of mind,so id go with a local co at first to get your feet wet.i hope this helps

 

I would go local if I could find one that would hire with no experience...

 

I'd go Maverick if I could, followed by McElroy and TMC, all flats.
