I just picked up a 2000 379 with a 2ws 550 with a 18 speed and 355 rears. I run between Colorado and Az. and seen on here that the older electronic cats don't like to be lugged down much. This is the 1st cat I have owned and would like some insight to this. I haven't pulled a load yet hope to be heading to Colorado Friday so I would like any and all advice. I have been a O/O for 16 plus years just 2 other trucks but neither had a cat. Have plans for a PDI manifold and turbo and a Mr. Haney ecm upgrade after I get a few other things done. Thanks in advance
2000 2ws

I also have 2ws with Mr Haney 7cz program, pdi manifold, Mr Haney turbo and cam. You will be very pleased. Sweet spot is 1400-1500 for cruising and 1500-1800 pulling. I'm always 80k, not aero. and averaging 5.8-6.0 pulling lots of hills.
Big Josh Thanks this. -
What do you consider lugging, 1100 ??
-
I didn't know a 7cz was even possible. I'm really looking forward to that 1st load more so than ever before to see what this will do right out the box. Thanks for the reply.

Yes. I have heard some people say the new ones can lug down to 1000 ok but not the older ones. I don't know if even 1100 is to low.
-
I let mine down to 1150 before it would fall in its face.
Stock tune and parts 550
Best fuel mileage at 1350 - 1400 -
I have a 99 with a 1LW, and I don't let it under 1300 on grades. Flat ground is okay. My truck runs good at 1500 cruising... I have a 550hp 3:55 rears and an 18. Mine friend has the 2ws and he drives it the same... Same setup as mine and yours..

Lugging is anything under 1200RPM with this engine. If your climbing a long grade and know you will need to downshift before topping the grade, downshift at 1400RPM. If you know that you can top the grade without downshifting and stay above 1200RPM when you crest the top of the grade, stay in that gear, as long as the EGTs and coolant temperatures are in safe ranges.
logtrucker25 and Big Josh Thank this. -
Thanks all for the replys.

I have never been more excited to take a truck out and work it with a heavy load. -
Just did 1st load, gross weight right at 80k from Az to Co right up 25. Truck pulled good although I thought it would pull the hills a little better, I might have had to high of expectations. Thing runs down the road at about 170 which seams a little cool for me, is that normal? EGT's stayed around 800-900 most of the time peaked at 1100 if I keep on it. Oil pressure 70 at 1400 RPM. Haven't checked mpg have to play the weight game with this truck so will have to see how heavey the next load is before fueling.
