"CoPilot Truck" iPad app or PCM750???

Been using the non-truck version of the app on an Acer Tab for a couple months now. Been working very well so far. As with any "tool" I also use common sense, pre-planning with maps and my company's route suggestions and knowing when not to listen to it. I had a Garmin and it was just the same for the last part of my previous statement. I would hope the truck version would be better on this point though (no routing down dirt roads or u-turns on interstates). I was waiting for the premium version of truck to be released before spending the big bucks.

 

If you already have an iPad then it makes more sense to pay a lot less and get the app instead of buying the 750. The iPad version allows for several additional "connected" features that a standalone device doesn't have (wifi, 3G) like weather and traffic also. And you are still only using one device instead of two. One other thing is that the iPad screen technology looks far better than any stand-alone GPS. It's simply a very nice, high-res, responsive touchscreen that Apple pays way more money for than any GPS makers use.

 

I have been using CoPilot on my iPad for about a year. It's great, and like any GPS back it up with a paper map

 

Do you guys have to be connected to the internet for the iPad GPS software to work?

 

Depends on what map program you are trying to use. For CoPilot - NO, because it loads the maps onto the device. But many GPS programs like the Navigation app that comes on my Droid, yes. SO again, it depends on which program you choose.

 

I wonder if the Copilot app for the iPhone 4 is a "huge" chunk of data? Most apps are small because they stream. But if you're somewhere with no signal, an app that streams would be useless.

 

It doesn't stream. The "connected features" would not be available if you are not in a signal area but the navigation would work.

It is 28 Mb according the the description on the iTunes store.

 

Maybe 28mb for the main app, but the maps will take close to 2gigs of space.

Yeah, 28mb is nothing. 2gb on the other hand....my phone has less than 8gb. I'd have to clean house!
