I lost my dump truck driving job when the housing boom went bust in Florida several years ago. Since then, I've been seeing news reports about terrible tornado damage around the South and Midwest. It occurred to me that there would be a need for dump truck drivers to haul the debris away.
Since it doesn't look like new home construction is ever going to start in Florida again in my lifetime, would it be a good idea for me lock up my house and hit the road to these various disaster areas in order to find work?
    I don't own a truck, but I possess a squeaky-clean CDL-A and tri-axle dump truck experience.
I have no family in Florida, so I suppose I could stay up there for years and not get homesick.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

they tend to frown upon fly-by night outfits that come in to towns after a disaster.

Some states are really cracking down on it and the "registrations" for doing business are really showing that.

Keep an eye on Craigslist sometimes I see job ads for CDL drivers to operate dump trucks for the clean up,I reply to one such ad last year and the guy offer me the job but with some Google searching the guy name turns out he a theft and rips off drivers and never pays his drivers a dime.Ripoffreport.com is a good website to look up someone or a company.

If the areas you are looking at are anything like it was in New Orleans you will not be able to work on the clean up crews unless you are already on the FEMA contractor list. There was a huge influx of fly by night people here after the storm and the only way any of them did get on was that they knew a friend of a friend that had a contract to clean up the debris. Also If you only have a tri-axle dump truck you'd be wasting your time going there. Most of those jobs pay by the yard and with the average tri-axle being about 19-21 yards someone with a one ton truck and a gooseneck dump trailer will be able to haul more then you at half the cost of you. AIf you really want to get into debris hauling find a old coal tri-axle trailer thats 35 ft long 102'' wide which is about 76 yards and you'll make more.

I'll say, go for it! You don't have anything keeping you in FL anyways. Especially if there isn't any job opportunities there. Just don't look for any job offers on Craigslist, there's only scammers on that site.

One other thing to consider is this, shortly after a disaster there will be some companies that volunteer their services. The last company I drove for done just that for the town of Reading, KS. The owner gets a real good fuzzy feeling, and that his company donated $$$$ to help. Prior to actually working in the area, the local Emergency Management held a meeting with all the "volunteers", and one thing that was clearly explained was that we all knew that this was voluntary, and that we could not submit claims to the state for reimbursement.

several good ideas here except for the craiglist ~ anything you see there you verify somehow, I am going to Manta for all listings and job-search ..... in particular for this job search what you would do is go find the "approved contractor list" from F.E.M.A. then mail the companies directly saying what you just said.

burger-flippin to finance / maybe hard but if you have any other ideas I want to hear them
