Hey pete3871, Ive been reading all your post since you started this thread but there is one thing I have not seen you post.
One question that came to mind is....On average, how much is it costing you for fuel? Before and after the fuel surcharge.
I understand fuel is like buying gold and I have read how your saving on fuel but I was just wondering what is the cost for you on fuel, before and after. How many gallons will your tanks hold and how often are you buying fuel and do you fill to capacity?

I do fill up when I buy fuel and our trucks all have two 100 gallon tanks. All of my weekly post have my fuel cost included of course,as that is my biggest expense.I dont get to see my real paper statement every week because its mailed,so I don't have the real figures to tell you exactly how much my fuel cost me every week.ACT gets a fleet discount on fuel prices at pilot and flying j,so thats where we fuel at.I can only look at my statement on line and it's not as detailed as the paper statement that is mailed. The fuel discount vary's from stop to stop and state to state, but I think it's around 12-15 cents off the pump price, best I can figure.
We get the fuel surcharge on all miles driven loaded and empty and that also vary's every week.Last three weeks it's been .47/mile.Here's how I figure it.Lets say I can average 8 miles per gallon, thats 8 x .47 = 3.76 and fuel cost me 4.00 per gallon.then my fuel cost would really be .24/gal.So as you can see getting great fuel mileage is what helps me make my money and not blow it out the stacks. If I got 6 mpg x .47 = 2.82 and fuel cost me 4.00 then my expense would be 1.18 per gallon.Big difference on 2 mpg, almost 5 times as much.Thats why we all(well not all)but the smart drivers slow down and do everything we can to get better mileage.
It all depends on the circumstanse of your job and how it pay's.If I fully owned this truck and had a gig that paid 3.00/mile and could run all the miles I wanted every week then I would sacrifice fuel mileage for the better pay.As I've stated before ACT is not a big mileage company, you are going to average around 2400-2500 per week,so thats why fuel mileage is so important to me.You don't run hard, you run smart if you want to make the best money you can with the loads you get. -
I appreciate the breakdown on the fuel cost. Ive read all your post and like how informative you were about why lease works for some and not others. Im suppose to start orientation on the 23rd but as a company driver. I would like the lease purchase thing but I also have a family that I would like to see other than once every other month or so.
I never really knew that much about a LP but after reading your post I know a lot more now than I did. Great info and insight.pete3871 Thanks this. -
Thanks Glimmer, and thank's for using me as a refferal to ACT.I think it's real smart of you to know what's more important to you at this point in your life, which of course should be your family.I'm assuming that you have kids and most of the lease failure's are guy's that need to be home taking care of they're family's needs. What's the point of being on the road making good money,if your family's falling apart. There's alway's time to lease a truck or buy one when you're really ready for that.

That's the same with me,I'm just paying the tolls myself. The load
I took to Ardmore was going thru KC then straight down I-35,but they had it routed about 400 miles of state roads just to avoid a 18.00 toll.If they're running company trucks that way,I don't understand how they can't figure that it's costing alot more in fuel to avoid the tolls.Like I said this is fairly new because I've run out of Lawton quite a few times and it was routed on the toll road, being the shortest way, until around the first of march.Strange -
Yeah I saw where you were dropping in St Louis and I was sitting on my butt thinking wow his dispatcher is really working to keep him moving.Good hustle on your part to keep yourself moving.

are all the trucks 660's with tripacks
no frig? inverter?
no compartments on the side for microwave?
i am in a 2011 T700 with a fridge apu and inverter but your making a lot more money
i guess i need to figure out what is important
wife says we are moving to joliet il so i guess hiring area be fine
i like reinventing myself on paper but everyone will have elogs just the way it is
Now if i could get transam to pay your rates or ACT to spec out Transam like trucks the world could be perfect till i woke up -
I have a microwave and my apu is a carrier. Also my truck was pre wired with 2 110 outlets. I came from a t700 as well and yes you need to do a lot of rearranging to make it work but I'm a hell of a lot happier now then I've ever been. Not to mention the fact I get through the house almost weekly sometimes more. And to top it all off I make as much money on a slow week as I did a good week as a company driver. Even after putting tax money aside. As for the fridge ya it would be nice but my coleman cooler fits nicely in the cubby ikon the passenger side of the sleeper and does what I need.

I have a tripak that doesn't have any 110 outlet's(don't know why) but I had a 2000 watt installed and have a microwave.I built a shelf at my dad's place when I went to visit them a couple weeks ago.The shelf runs up across where the double bunk would have been,I bought a couple of storage cabinents at home depot that are made out of plastic(light) and mounted them on the shelf along with my microwave.Really has made a big difference for me.I also mounted a 30 inch flat sreen on the passenger side of the bunk and it was super easy.Didn't drill any holes in the truck, just used the holes that were already there.I have a coleman like Kujo does and it works just fine.Your t700 has alot better storage and room than the t660,but with a little imagination you fix up a 660 to work out nice.If you're moving to Joliet, you would be in a great spot for ACT,we have alot of freight up there and you could get home, even overnight quite a bit.Saw a guy that went to oreintation with me and he had built a shelf in his truck and mounted a fridge up there.
I thought about doing that but as Kujo had advised me,most of those cheap fridges wear out real fast in a moving truck. So I think I,m going to save up and buy one of those high dollar coolers that will freeze.I looked at them at a truck show a couple years ago and they're well made with a good warranty, just very expensive, around 5-600 bucks.I really need the freezer part now.I love those marie callander pot pies that you can get at walmart and sam's,the chicken and turkey are great!I buy them now and they last 3 or 4 days in the coleman but then they get soggy, and nobody likes a soggy pot pie.
By eating out of the truck I've cut my food expense by 3/4.I've only eaten at a resturant 3 times in the last 2 weeks since I've been back out after installing my new equipment.I also found a alluminum folding table at wall mart(in the camping section)that fits perfectly on the floor in the bunk. That thing is great, cost me 20 bucks and it folds up and I can store it in the closet with my shirts,it's the perfect highth,it's what I'm using now to type on.Started lately just leaving it set up and it does'nt rattle or anything going down the road.I used rubber strips and foam strips to mount my shelf and other things,so there would'nt be any rattles or squeeks going down the road, that drives me nuts. The only thing I hear is when I hit a pot hole is the glass turntable in the microwave, rattle a little.
With the money I have saved, after installing all this stuff,I have donated it to the American Indian cause.I'm attracted like a moth to a light,to they're great monument's called casino's.Man I have to stop going in those dang things! -
Pete how did you end up doing the shelf? I remember we talked about doing one I just haven't had the time to mess with it.
Edit: Just seen 30" screen!!!???!?!! Holy crap man! Thats what I call living the good life. Lol. Please do share how you mounted that as well you have peaked my curiosity lol.Last edited: Apr 15, 2012
