We all should ask ourselves-" Am I doing a thorough pre-trip inspection?" Checking lug nuts, wheels, hubs and brakedrums for signs of rust, cracking, looseness and signs of wear? Honestly?

Definately. Just take a moment next time your at the truck stop or rest stop and watch how many drivers get up out of bed, get their coffee and go! Nothing in between. THey don't even check the 5th wheel pin! There are a lot of punks out there who will pull your 5th wheel and watch you drive out from under your trailer. Complete and methodical pre-trips are required!

I learned the importance of doing a quick walk around after I went to the rest area restroom and came out and my service brake line had been removed and laid on the catwalk. I found this because I walked around and something looked odd.

This is an issue I had not thought of before, so thanks for the heads up. It is my intention to always check my vehicle before I start driving again after stops of any duration, but I wouldn't have thought in terms of correcting an intentional misdeed by someone else. For those who do such things, it could be the type of thing that could ultimately kill someone! The term "punk" is too kind.
Just how often does this sort of thing happen? -
More often than you think. It happened to my hubby last year. Got less than a mile down the road and the trailer was loose from the truck. He stopped for fuel, pulled around back to park so he could grab a quick bite to eat, got back in the truck to go out on his next run and someone had pulled the 5th wheel pin.
Needless to say, he never gets back in his rig now, without checking it now. Its an expensive lesson. And whoever did it, knew how to stay off camera.
