I don't know if you PSD guys have found this yet, but there's a link on the Drivers Online site to the backing vids. They show what we'll have to perform for the testing.

For those of us considering Prime, can you describe the requirements for the backing test?
-
seriously?
Hmm, well first you must be capable of doin a thorough walk around of truck n trailer, climb in cab, start truck, check mirrors, put trans into reverse, give a little fuel with throttle and then idle on back while watching mirrors at all times.
Just kidding!!! Im sorry to mess with you like that LOL Just had to doit tho, so spank me if you must LOL
windsmith Thanks this. -
Dont back over the examiner... lol Doesnt go over well. You have to do 3 different tests... Straight line back. Offset to either sight side (drivers side) OR blind side (passenger side). Final test is either blind side parallel, sight side parallel, or an alley dock. The parallels are just parallel parking, dont do it much in the real world, at least I dont. (side note, a 48' trailer with a condo sleeper takes up 9 car parking spots) Alley dock is a 90 degree back. If you hit a cone its 2 points. You get 2 get out and looks, not allowed to get out a third time. Also get 2 free pull ups. Every additional pull up is a point. You are given 15 minutes PER meneuver, over 15 is an auto fail. If you reach 13 points, you fail.

Thanks for the info. We aren't trained on parallel parks at the school here in NC, since the DMV test doesn't require doing any. Although we have practiced an offset maneuver that's similar to backing out of a parking space against the curb, around an obstruction and then into another space behind the obstruction. Got 2 weeks left in CDL class, will see if the instructors will set up cones for parallel parking practice.
I tied for the highest score on the backing tests with a 20+ year experienced driver who's taking the class to get a Federal disability waiver.

Real handy for getting into that middle of the line opening in the rest area at 0200, that everyone else is passing up because they can't parallel park a big rig.skellr Thanks this.
-
I said "much" lol Have used it to get into a parking spot at a rest area or something. Just try to get a pull through first
No sense in backing if I dont have to, too hard on the tires.

I had not p parked since my testprep. Went to Walmart in west palm and the only place they let rigs park was a side lot the planters were set abut 6 feet further part than the truck is long. I still don't know how I did it on first try. Trainee prior to this had a bit of an attitude due to his past experience. When I pulled along side it he was like no way don't be a fool even I can't make this. It was nice to set the brakes and say ' your buying lunch right"
