I've been reading through the posts on the good/bad of the companies and OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :biggrin_2556:

I'm just starting training at the local community college and so far what I'm gathering is stay far, far, far away from both Werner and Swift. Now Swift I knew to stay away from but the horrible postings on various sites about Werner surprised me-- research does help!

I'm looking at Pride Transport, Squire and Conway for the possible "starter" companies for me once I complete the first part of my training.
I'm focusing on being a company driver I'm not getting near the whole lease stuff for at least a year.

From your experience male/female new and seasoned drivers what company is a good company to begin my career as a solo driver?
I now my experience will/could be different from yours but if you recall the company orientation, training period to when you got your truck and started the solo driving that would be perfect.

    Thanks,
    L

Your in Arizona? Look into May Trucking Company. They have two options, all 48 states or western 11. Good starter company without a bunch of hoops to jump through IMO.

Why a starter company ? I always look for a company I would like to spend my whole career at. It doesnt always work out but I never went to work for anyone just to have a job .

I have been at my company for 17 years now and I hope to do another 20 here .

Some companies like Heartland won't hire me because I'm a student driver with less than 6 months OTR experience so I'm using the term "starter" company because I'm just starting in the trucking profession.

I am on my second company in a year. You will find more negative than positive post.I done like you and tried to research different companies before I started.Just take what the recruiters tell you with a grain of salt. They are just trying to fill seats.Good luck w/the search.Werner is not all bad but no company will be the right fit for everyone.

The one and only company I have read about over and over.... absolutely no way to go to...I have not yet read anything positive about is CR England. I do not know from experience though..and I do not mean to offend anybody.

My husband started out at Werner and besides the absolute no home time for 8 weeks at at a time, there was a paycheck that didn't suck toooo much!

Your going to hear this a lot but 'its what you put into it and what you can deal with'

no company is golden. I know swift drivers that love their company and job and also those that despise it.

Its going to be feel yourself into it kinda thing. what works for you. Lot of home time, lot of pay, lot of well whatever.

I work for a mega carrier and if they didnt treat me like a meat bag id respect em a lot more. There are goods and bads to all companies. if this was easy or there were an easy answer there would be one big mega company with a million drivers. Because getting into the field isn't exactly easy you kind of have to go in one direction to start and deal with it until you you figure out what it is you actually want. Take your time deal with life as its passed to you and plan. look at this as a career and not a job. Consider yourself a professional and look for what best suits you. no one here can do that for you.
Do you want to be a company driver or owner op?
Do you want to be day caber or OTR?
Do you want to swing door or flap tarps?
    Do you want ...
its all preference. There are companies and situations out there for all. You just have to know what you are looking for. Whats going to work best for your lifestyle. Tke your time do the nitty gritty dirty work and look and feel your way to waht you actually want. no none cane say whats best for you and your situation

I think it's best to consider trucking companies as if you will work there until retirement. It keeps you from dismissing problems that will drive you nust over time. But when it comes to your first company I don't think that is very likely. Driving for a living is just too different from what most people have done before and you won't know all the things that are important for long term seuccess until you have worked as a driver. That's why it's very uncommon for new drivers to stay with their first company more than the first year. I'm probably too analytical for my own good. My dad and brother were driving OTR before I went OTR. And still I learned some things that were important for me that I never would have thought of before I got into driving.

After your first year you should really be able to narrow things down and not job hop.
