I've always thought and read that the 70 hours is on-duty(driving) hours, but the logbook and guide the company gave me says to calculate on-duty(driving), and on-duty(not driving) towards the 70 hours. Other employees are also telling me that it's only driving hours.

Which is it? Does on-duty(not driving) count towards the 70 hours, or no?

your 70 hours IS made up of on duty (driving) and on duty not driving....
add line 3 and line 4 togather and thats what you put on your recap

those 'other employees' will have a rude awakening if their logs are examined out on the road. But they'll have 34 hours to review them as they sit under their OOS order!

Those employees had better take a log class.Your 70 is lines 3 and 4 combined.

Most drivers average LOGGING 1 hour or less of line 4 per day. So, while it hurts some it's not as bad as you might think.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Seems kinda silly, though, to allow us to drive 11 hours a day and be on duty but not driving for an additional 3, but then when you figure the 70 hour 8 day thing that's... 70/8=8.75 hours total for each day.

Not trying to be a smart###; but just read the logbook. I know the print on recap section is small, but it tells you exactly what to do. 1. lines 3+4 total. 2. Monthly recap in front of book and do the math. 3. Go back to page and fill in what you just figured.

Keep you dispatcher apprised of your hours remaining on a daily basis. Do not violate. It's you future and safety at stake.

I was doing that, as per the log book instructions, but I kept hearing over and over how I didn't need to include line 4, which is why I'm asking here for clarification. Frankly I hate having to even ask here, but my new driver orientation was three inches of paperwork to read and sign on a two-hour ride to pick up my first truck.

And I have a feeling that my dispatcher doesn't care about the 70/8 rule, to be honest. But you are right, it is my ### on the line and not his(except the DOT is already investigating the company...), so if I'm out of hours, I'm out of hours.
