Is leasing on to Landstar (or an outfit with similar requirements) really going to increase your income enough to justify paying out the extra cash for a less than 5 year old truck? I don't know the answer to that, but I believe that someone here does.
Really cheaper to run a new truck?

To answer your queation no, it is not cheaper to run a new truck. New trucks cost more in taxes, insurance and from what i have bin seeing repairs because they are breaking down more often than older trucks. All trucks need general upkeep and maintenance. MPG wil depend on you as a driver and the freight and area you run in. I know plenty of guys getting just as god or better mpg with older trucks than guys with newer trucks.
MNdriver Thanks this. -
I still run a 1994 cabover Frieghtliner with a C model cat and a ten speed have been running it for ten years now It was supposed to have 200000 on an overhaul when I got it.I have not touched the engine transmission or rears in that time .I am leased to mercer and ran all over the Us and canada with it. Was 9500 dollars for this tractor 10 years ago a bad investment. It averages 6 mpg over a years time and takes a gallon of oil at 10000 miles most of the time.I do have a fass fuel system and an OPS ecopur oil bypass system on it but do not do extended oil changes. I change it at 15000 miles an it is just starting to get black. My oil samples have all came back fine, now with this setup I have 3 oil filters and 3 fuel filters which is kind of unusual but it works for me. And before anybody says I can not run it in California you are wrong as I run california a lot and have never been bothered ( but they do terrify me)One other thing I haul more loads that are real close to 50000 than loads that are 25000 or less.So I am pleased just waiting for others on here to tell me how stupid I am.

If your making money you can't be stupid.

Here is the thing other guys make money I make profit. But a while back some guy on here said you can't spend profit at wal mart. I did not know that I was of the impression That profit could be spent anyplace I felt like spending it,These are the people we are up aginst in the trucking business, maybe I should rethink my modus operendie or how ever it is spelled. If I would have went to harvard for four years instead of three I might have been able to spell all those big words and phrases. But the building was finished and they did not need anymore brick hauled in there, thus my time at Harvard was finished over caputt

Profit is merely the money left over after you've paid all of the bills. If you aren't making money, you'll never see a profit. If you're spending more money than you're making, you won't see one either.

My uncle that always thinks he's being watched is probably right, then.

Any Black helicopters hovering around him by any chance ?

You misread gman's post. Companies like Landstar and Mercer DON'T have age requirements. Average tracor age at Landstar is over 10 years old.
-
They are inspections and then more inspections but you are very correct.
