A fatal crash between NCSHP and a civilian was deemed non-preventable because the civilian turned in front of him. This despite the fact that the officer was traveling 8mph over the posted speed limit. Note that NCSHP officers also perform CMV roadside inspections and enforcement.

It would be interesting to compare the results of their investigations into similar crashes involving a CMV to see how those turned out. This outcome may turn out to be a valuable one for CDL drivers and their attorneys.

Distracted or not, he should be considered a professional driver and held accountable as such.

O.K. God knows I'm not a cop lover, but why did this guy pull out in front of a vehicle that was close enough to hit him? I mean use some common sense when entering a highway from a parking lot. You drivers have all had some numb-nuts jerk pull out in front of your rig. They figure" oh he can't be moving that fast he's so big!" Or they think "he has to stop because I'm in front of him". Not"Can he stop?" Sure, he probably was cut a little slack because he is a cop, but people have to take responsibility for their own actions, even if it kills them!

I agree with you 100%. My point is that if it were a CMV that hit her, the CMV driver would have been found at fault. Mainly because of the 8mph over the speed limit.

in NC he was more then likely looking for a 2nd job :biggrin_2559:. CMPD officers are the highest paid in the state (charlotte) and they only start at $35,000/yr and TOP pay WITH a 4 year degree is only $65,000 (thats NOT for patrol officers either...) And they only get 1.25hrs OT a week, only other opertunity for them to make Extra money is court time and Off duty work (when availible) and that doesnt pay all that much extra.
