Hi, I currently live in the uk but am looking to move to the usa sometime next year. My mother is american so i have an American passport and citizenship. I would like to train and become a trucker. I know that at 18 i can only drive in my home state. i have seen so many company's offer training for the CDL and then guarantee employment but for all of the ones i have seen you need to be 21, does anybody know of any company's that will take me on at 18 and train me with a job at the end of it? Will i struggle to get employed at 18? Thanks in advance

i dont know about any other states , but wv you CAN have a cdl , BUT CANT drive out of the state , you might beable to find a local dump truck company

Thats all states that I know of, you can get an intrastate cdl at 18 but you wont be elegible for an interstate cdl until your 21. A dump job or cement truck might be your best bet. Maybe look into a lumber yard job with a knuckle boom truck or the likes but other than that you might have to wait till your 21 or older. -
Thanks for the replys, what i meant to ask was does anybody know of a company that offers a scheme like swift, that they will employ you, train you for your cdl and then put you to work, but for an intrastate license at age 18. all the scheme like this that i have seen you need to be 21 or older because they will put you to work going out of state.

I live in indiana i have been do research on it cause i want mine to its in the family. I am going to get my class A then haul coal until i turn 21 or at worst grain at harvest time.Log your hours close to home for awhile and take the best pay you can get until your 21. Then go do what you want. Experience will help you and will pay you more later.

Well, in Louisiana you can't drive anything over 26,000 pounds without a CDL. A straight truck with air brakes requires a class B CDL with air brake endorsment. You have to be 21 to drive a combination vehical in state or not because they have air brakes and exceed the 26,000 pound limit. Trying to drive a truck at 18, you may as well hang it up because I've tried and got no where so I just stuck it out until I turned 21 and here I am having problems trying to get in at going on 23 because of money issues for the cost of going to school. I don't like the idea of a company based school anyway because you have to sign a contract with them and then your stuck there until that contract is up and it's normally a year.
