One of the more recent threads I saw on mx engines, or dafs where I come from:

    Daf burning oil
    #by#F550 on Thu 26 Apr 2012, 03:42
I'm doing a few trips in a daf and it's guzzling oil, it's only 2007 , do they normally do this? Or has this one just been wrecked? Gearbox seems a bit iffy too!

Yes....its a regualr complaint....both the engine and the gearbox. To be fair though, most gearbox issues are down to driver use. Some guys dog them into gears and wear out the synchromesh rings prematurely......this causes them to grate whilst engaging gears thereafter

My one uses about a gallon every two months or that. Need to top it up once in a while.

    How much is guzzling?

Mine about 3/5liters a week.depending in the weight of the load.
The others in the fleet do the same. So it must be the norm

It's A Daf Is'nt It, Anything With Them Is Nothing New, Bring Back The Old One's, And Throw Away Them New Yoke's.

With Daf's you'll also need to check the water level daily...

I never drove a daf before but by the way a friend of mine goes on about them you'd think they were the best yokes ever invented, not lookin like a great yoke now!

I don't mean to go about it too much but this is from a mechanic this side of the pond from another thread on the same issue so you know it's not just me! Stick with your Cummins guys....these MX engines are some pile of junk....Just wait until they are four or five years old....Paccar will be lucky if it doesn't break them. Nearly every one of them passing through our workshop has been opened for various reasons....excessive oil consumption, dropping valves, blowing up,running bearings etc....A Cummins,,Caterpillar,Detroit,Scania,Volvo,Mercedes is a Rolls Royce next to these yokes. They are fine for three or four years and then they fall to bits. Any of my customers who bought them for light work found them satisfactory, but any of them doing hard/heavy work got rid of them and went back to Scania,Mercedes or Volvo.

I have a friend who is a meticulous owner driver, who has his 2008 DAF 510bhp MX maintained by a dealer close to the factory in Holland where they are made. After 350,000miles,the MX engine dropped a valve while he was at the very North of Sweden. The engine grenaded itself. Daf in Sweden wanted in the region of US $30,000 to rebuild it. Even the SCR exhaust box had to be replaced at a cost of over US$5,000. After four weeks negotiating with the DAF dealers and factory, they eventually did the job for a lesser sum(I wasn't told how much). He suffered more than a month off the road between the repairs and the arguing with DAF/Paccar. So much for the great back up and warranty they are blowing about. Even though he is motoring again,he can't wait to get rid of the technical marvel of an MX.....but he must first try and recoup his losses.

Stick with your Cummins guys.....you will be well paid for it in resale value in years to come and lack of downtime...and at least in the US...there are several good workshops who can fix them.....The MX will end up like Volvo's/Mercedes own engines in the US....Too complicated,no one able to fix them, extravagantly priced parts and extravagantly priced labour as a lack of technical expertise and know how will exist.

The MX in the Pete 386 I drive doesn't burn oil or use water. It is ok on mpg. My only issue is power. It has none pulling a hill loaded down. The engine breaking power is weak as well. If those two issues got fixed I would be happy with the MX.

To be fair they aren't too bad on fuel , the fact you guys don't pull as much weight as us may help them too, if I can save a couple of you guys the pain I suffered with these things I'd be happy. If you have them already I sincerely wish you the best of luck with them.

25000 miles right now. Hauling about 80000lb per load. The MX I have is also limited on its rpm to 1600rpms. Any idea why they would limit the rpms?

I'm hauling 99,000 lbs gross every load sometimes up to 110,000 lbs. Is there a 550hp/1850 version of the mx over there? The only advantage I see so far is the lower tare weight. However for me it's
    reliability 1st, power 2nd, tare weight 3rd. I can't worry about mileage
    my weight kills that.

I don't think so unless it was recently introduced, as far as I know it's up to 510 hp

I'm currently driving a twin screw scania r620 doing heavy haulage up to 330,000 lbs, my average fuel is about 6.8 at my average weight of 200,000lbs approx ,although at 330,000lbs it can get right down to 4.9 mpg, my truck is 114,000lbs empty. at fuel prices here u have to worry about fuel economy, over 10 dollars a gallon currently.

Cummins and scania have a new fuel system they developed together, at our standard 97,000lbs a 730 hp scania will return 11mpg's ( about 9.7mpgs us gallons) cummins and scania have built a new research and testing facility near Scanias headquarters in Sweden so I'd be expecting some exciting things to come also the new mercedes are promising 12 mpg's at this weight and that's got a Detroit deisel ! Just because you're heavy doesn't mean you have to suffer much longer with bad fuel returns.

    Cat sdp Thanks this.

Above 1500rpm the engine has less power not more.
    http://www.paccarengines.com/PDF/PACCAR_MX_Brochure.pdf
    Look at the torque graph.
    Power goes down above 1500rpm.

I'm guessing it is a compagny truck?
And the firm had it limited?
