Your not kidding there...that truck averages 3.5 mpg when loaded and 5.5 when empty. It has the 600 cummins and an 18 speed. When you pull that kind of weight fuel mileage goes out the window. We do what we can to conserve fuel mainly not idling the truck. The company has APU's on the trucks and believe me ours gets used!!
We added the electric skillet to our kitchen stuff...needed that bad. Now i can cook just about anything. We got an extension cord cause i dont wanna FRY anything in the truck...too hard to get rid of those food smells.
We have been here in Waushka (sp?) WI since Thursday afternoon. Our load will be ready Monday they say. It is 16ft long, 11.5 ft wide and 13.5 tall so we will be rolling out at about 15.5ft tall. Bo can get the trailer down to about 24 inches off the ground. The transformer weighs 103,000.
We got a room for this weekend...a much needed break from the truck. Got some more cleaning done in the truck...still getting that NASTY yellow nicotine off the walls and everything in the truck. It smells much better now...thank God.
I will post more recipes tomorrow if i can. I have tried a few new ones over the weekend.
Oh and almost forgot to say...talking about cost...OK permit cost 912.00 for 60 miles PLUS a front and rear escort they were 225.00 EACH !!!

How long does it take to load one of them and unload it?Where do u normally go?
-
Including stacking and unstacking the jeep and booster...i can take 2-4 hours to load/unload
we go about everywhere...so far we have been all over except the NE and NW not saying Combined dont go there...we just have not been there yet.
We have heard you can be out on the windfarms for 2-3 days sometimes waiting to get unloaded...that didnt happen in OK...we were unloaded same day...but it took all day. There were 4 trucks to unload that day and they have to move the crane to each site where they unload the cell. -
I figured it was a long process to lding/unlding.I imagine hauling supersize pays real good.
-
Yes, it pays good but the COST of pulling the load is much more too. We have a friend at Combined...he is leased on with his own truck and trailer and he does REAL good. I was very surprised at how well he does. He has been there 19 years and I think he has had his own truck/trailer for at least 6 of those years.
aiwiron Thanks this. -
Guys hauling those type of loads have a real low turnover rate. Most have been with the company for many yrs.

That looks like a GE 1.6 NAcelle. 'nacelle' is an aeronautical term for the cover over an aircraft engine, and it was borrowed by the wind industry.
In my previous career, it was my job to walk into those towers after they were built, push the start button, and then scratch my head while figuring out why they wouldn't start.
The economy cut salaries for those jobs by around 50%. While it still pays better than an OTR job, I refuse to do the same work for half of what I was earning. -
Woohoo -- 600hp and 18 speed; at least your engine/trans is set up for heavy haul..
-
Well there was a fire at the plant last night and our transformer was covered with soot. So MAYBE we will get to load in the morning. They have to have the cranes and all inspected before they can load anything.

Very true, most small companies require up to 15 years of over the road experience to include heavy hauling of 5 years minimum, no points or accidents either for 10 years. Insurance scan sometimes goes back lifetime depending on the underwriter, no DUI or DWI ever.
I will be headed out next week sometime and 99% of everything I drag is O/S, O/D or heavy. Unit empty weight on a 6 axle tractor and trailer will be around 46k empty, I am not half the size they are either for trailer.
