50??? i dont think very many drivers would want to go 20 mph UNDER speed limit.

Hmmm...this is a lot of information to consider! Thank you kindly! Looks like the only thing I can do atm is slow down, and see what I can get out of that.

Unfortunately I have no easy way to check how many MPG I am getting. This probably sounds stupid, but I fill up at 50 gallons per, no more, no less so that I can get my shower credits. Topping off, resetting the trip odometer, then topping it back off won't work for me if I want to get the shower credits. Although if I can see what kind of fuel economy I'm getting and improve it, it would more than make up for the money saved on showers. I may just purchase a system that will check the AVG and real time MPG though, and use that so I can still get my shower credits :p

Easiest thing I can do I suppose is slow down. So I'll at least do that.

See if your boss has a laptop and cable to hook it up to the truck and check the ECM MPG. Check it monthly and see your progress. This is not an exact number, it usually runs about .5 MPG higher than what you're actually getting.

You will see big improvements in MGP if you slow down. According to Peterbilt a truck needs about 70hp to overcome aerodynamic drag at 50mph. At 70mph the same truck needs 180hp to overcome aerodynamic drag. At 80mph you need almost 300hp to overcome aero drag. The sweet-spot for truck aerodynamics is around 50-55mph, going faster and will burn much more fuel and going slower won't save you much fuel as aerodynamics aren't that important at slower speeds.

If you have an Android phone download Fuel log and watch your mpgs, then compare your driving habits.

ahhhhh i fill my tanks and do my own math dont trust the dashboard reading on mpg
I always have extra shower credits and never smell
i don't understand that by filling up you dont get enuf credits unless you dont run enough miles to fuel up daily so top it off once then top it off everytime atround 50 gal you can still check your mpg

I agree, but for all this to play out the right way, the truck has to have the right gearing to take advantage of the slower speed. You could run into a situation where you are lugging in one gear, or the engine is screaming in another. Both of which are not very fuel efficient or good for your engine and drive train. You have to find the right balance depending on what gearing is in the truck. Only way to make everything work out exactly like it should is to spec out a truck to match exactly what you are doing. Otherwise, you have to compromise a little. You may not be able to run 55, but you could get by with 58 or 60 or even 62. You will just have to play with it and tweak out where the truck performs well at a lower speed. There is no "one size fits all" solution.

bingo :p Since it's expedite shipping, I don't run enough, to fuel up daily. And I'm not sure about the ECM MPG, but I know at least for doing the math yourself; that is to say filling up the tank, setting the trip, and then doing the division; idle time will DEFINITELY mess with your results since you're only going by how much fuel was used, and not how much was used only while moving.

I had no idea the savings were that drastic, I'll try and keep it under 60 then if my driving hours permit this. I had no idea how much extra power went into overcoming drag.

Buy 1/2 your fuel shut the pump off restart and finish filling. 2 showers, full tanks. I do it all the time if I'm gonna need an extra shower and not going to need to fuel.
