Workmans comp being needed depends on tr state and Conways policies I would ask them BUT remember w/o it if you are hurt while working for yourself and cannot work the bills still roll in so as someone who has been self-employed I would still get it. Also don't forget about;
Double the SSC contribution, bob tail insurance, Deffinately disability insurance, catastrophic medical policy, and depending on experience just getting insurance for your business (tractor) maybe difficult if not impossible. Also you are going to want $10,000 + in revolving credit through a bank (better rates the. Credit card) for fuel, $5000 to start a Maint. Fund, and seemed to work well to have a $7500 home fun for unexpected homelike expenses.
If you have never run a business or been and O/O I would also recommend finding an O/O at Conway to mentor you so you have a valid resource to ask specific questions to. Also, listen to some ItunesU college lectures on small business to get a feel for some of the issues. Most important take what Kevin Rutherford w/ a grain of salt every operation is different (I do off road timber as well as drive for conway and avg MPG for 3 trk's is around 3.1 to 3.5 MPG which is fine in that operation but would bankrupt a millionaire running OTR in less then a year. He gives solid general advice but some (lift axles, MPG projections, etc) won't apply hence finding an O/O currently at Conway to ask questions to.

I haven't really heard anything bad about Stevens but they do push their lease program. Avoid leasing until you have a year or two under your belt. Then, if you like the lifestyle, start looking at the O/O possibilities.
Example, I blew a tire. The re-cap wrapped around the axle which trashed the rim. I called the road service department and they had a guy to me in about 2 hours. It was a Sunday, the rim, the tire...over $1500. Give it some time before you make the owner operator leap.
Talk to a Con-Way recruiter (1-800-work-4-us) and ask about the apprentice program specifically. That is dedicated to Vets. By the way, thank you for your service. Good luck to you and keep us posted! -

Folks. Con-way Inc. consists of THREE different companies:
Con-way Truckload - OTR carrier (48 states and Canada)
Con-way Freight - cartage/local freight carrier
Menlo - logistics company.
So. when you say you want to work for Con-way, you need to be more specific as the hiring criteria/jobs at all three companies are different. -
One good thing I do see about Conway is that I was going to see if I could find a Conway driver at one of my stops to talk to and get their take. Easier said than done. Seems as though they are continually rolling tape or at least more than me.

Hi, my name is Rebecca but I've chosen southernmade for my name because well I am. Anyway I'm a 41 year old wife and mother and underemployed. I owned my own business for 5 years but shut it down this year because of the economy. I've been looking for work since last year and all I can find is part time minimum wage work and that's not working for me. My husband and my father both were truck drivers and I've wanted to do it but everyone of them talked me out of it. The women that are my friends think that it's a great idea. I've been looking at companies and I've really become excited about Conway and have applied for the student trucking. If they like me, do you all know how long it will take to go through the pre-employment stuff, like checking me out and interview process. What are the schools like and are there more women driving now than when my husband was driving in the mid 90's?
