Anyone know anything about the Phase Training at SLC? I have my CDL A and start there on the 30th. I have received advice about keeping my locker locked! How are the facilities? How are their "dorm" rooms and the general conditions? How long will I be in the "dorm" versus in the truck during the Phase I training? Do they furnish any food during your training? I would ask the recruiter but most people say they are not truthful so I thought I would ask here.

    Gary,

I will give my opinion on the recruiters since I just finished in Richmond, IN and have not left yet lol. I think the recruiters are given info about just SLC, and maybe Burns Harbor, but know nothing concrete about the other schools. Hearing from a lot of people here in Richmond, their recruiter told them there would be a fridge and microwave in the hotel room. NOPE! And the school in Richmond is only 3-4 months old, and can only handle 80-100 students TOTAL, not the 30 from one week, 70 from the next and then 100+ from the week after that they have right now. Especially with as little staff that they have to handle the paperwork, medical, and instructors for the road and range. 200+ students at a time is just too much for this facility.

As far as food goes, I would imagine SLC would be the same as here and you would need to pay for your own. But I don't know what arrangements they have there, like a cafe or something. They just started having someone come in and provide lunch for $5 and it changes daily.

Just back from sometime, didn't even think about trucks for 4 days. Dewey it's a clown show sometimes with some of these guys. I watched a CRE drive spend about 30 min. Trying to jack back an alley dock at a walmart dc. Funny thing was he had unlimited space to the front. Why make it so difficult? Everyone watching got a good chuckle out of that. Sad thing is I know some of the trainers refuse to allow there students to back, or maybe the students won't do it. So they get a truck and have no idea what they are doing.
Went home wed. night. Took a load from Des Plaines, IL to Fridley, MN. P/U at 1400, del at 2300. Was nice to be home for first time in over 9 weeks. Last night picked up in Lakeville, MN and on way to Hudsonville, MI. Sitting at TA in Janesville, WI waiting till around midnight to leave cause of 0800 del. Tomorrow, plenty of time on this one, a little worried about how muck layover time there will be on this fleet.

Yes there are a lot of bad phase 1 trainers who only teach their students how to drive in a straight line. I had one of those trainers and when I became a first seat my backing was horrible.

I was at a dock in southern Georgia one night when after 30 minutes trying to get into the dock space the yard dog comes over. He knows I am new and he explains/shows me the pivot, jackknife and the 4x4 in about 10 minutes. That is when everything finally clicked for me. I will never forgot that guy, it has been almost 4 years since he helped me with my backing and I still use the things he taught me.

Lol, I know what you mean. I was lucky with my phz 1 trainer. He let me back. That said, I had one of those moments where I thought ther was no way to get that s.o.b. Trailer in the hole, but got it in there 30 min later. Was at Conway dallas, my trainer said best way was to figure it out on my own. So he just spotted me and eventually got it. I learned more about backing that night than any amount of classroom could have taught.

Lol, that's a tough one BD. Probably was more excited to get old sunny. At first I was a little disappointed with the color, but it's growing on me.
I was late arriving at pickup in Paw Paw, MI on Thursday night.
Slept a little to long, then made a wrong turn, got pulled over, cop says you are a professional driver and you don't know where your going? Good point officer. Well he helped me get turned around and gave me directions. Wasnt prepared because I was in a rush. Rookie mistake, plus was raining so hard couldn't use phone, gps or qualcomm. Was an hour late, but del. On time to walmart dc Tomah, WI. Had to use sleeper provision. Then DH up to Abbotsford about 80 miles north, to pickup preloaded trailer and del to Rochelle, IL. Sat morning.
Next load picks up at same place(americold) at 11 pm Sunday night ad delivers Monday morning a whopping 64 miles away.... Punishment?
So I call weekend dm today and ask him that. No, he says, it was a preloaded trailer so no big deal. Then he removes the crap load, and gives me one a little better, pick up at 1200 sun delivers mon 0015. 265 miles plus 35dh. I swear my regular dm and weekend dm are playing a little good cop bad cop. So far every time I think I'm gonna have to get pissed, something good happens, or at least something better. I still have kept a good attitude to this point. I don't complain a lot, except to my wife.

Yeah, I'll do that. Might take a while cause my computer skills are not too good. I've seen a few other yellow England trucks out there. In fact ran in to one early this morning at americold. Funny it was a gal, who actually got to choose her color. Had nice long chat about mw regional, shes been in for almost a year and loves it.
