I did finally hear from my recruiter today. She answered some of my questions, and said she would have to check on some of the others, then call me back, and of course she didn't. She claims on may 16th she will be contacting me with my info to book my greyhound ticket, and that the actual date/times I would be leaving are at my discretion. She called it an "open ended" ticket.
I still have the option of having WIA pay for CDL school, unfortunately.. my options are either to wait for PTEC on JULY 2nd.. or look into roadmaster, which Im a bit apprehensive about... or just go with swift as everything sits right now.
is a lack of communication with recruiters normal?

FLEMTP, what is the apprehension with Roadmaster, specifically? I am currently waiting for my student loan app to go through but once it does, I'll be attending Roadmaster here in North Carolina.
-
I took my DPS (DMV) road test with a group from Roadmaster. None of them had more than 4.5 hours of BTW time; I had 38.5. Any school's primary functions are SOLELY to:
1. Give you the information you need to pass your CDL written test.
2. Teach you to operate your equipment in a safe and controlled manner where you have the most basic skills necessary to pass the road test.
That is all you get from any school and Swift does an excellent job with their academies for a reasonable cost, $3900 ($2900 for veterans) that you can pay back through salary deductions. If you choose not to stay with Swift you can continue your payments and, if on time, your loan contract remains the same.
I very highly recommend the Swift Academy system to anyone starting out or starting again.

well, i ran into the same thing with a western express recruiter.can't make my mind up to go with all the complaints i've read about them here on this site

I would have gone through Swift, however, they don't accept students east of I-95 in North Carolina. That's why I'm going the private driving school route.

My apprehension is exactly what Cav stated.. they push you through quick.. and you get VERY LITTLE actual behind the wheel time.
I would have preferred to go to PTEC, which is a local vo tech center here in St pete. They give you several HUNDRED hours behind the wheel.. including a 200 mile night trip to miami. Unfortunately, they also have quite a waiting list, and at about half the cost of roadmaster.
Swift will be an acceptable alternative. Wont be anywhere close to the hours I'd like... but it will get me a good foundation to build on. -
Your time with the mentor, the second phase of your training, will be well spent and by the time you get on his truck you will know how to drive. When you get off you'll know the beginnings of how to be a truck driver. The third phase of the training begins when you upgrade to solo and have a truck assigned to you. I wish all y'all the best luck.

From what my recruiter a Roadmaster has told me, I should be getting 2 weeks of actual BTW time. It's a 4 week course, 2 weeks class time and 2 weeks road time. The thing I liked best about Roadmaster is that they offer Lifetime Job Placement, free of charge. I am aware I could always find a job on my own, but it never hurts to have resources to fall back on. Just my opinion.
Trust me though, if I could have gotten into a Company Driving School, I wouldn't be financing the $6000 that it will cost to go to Roadmaster.
Besides, from what I have found in my research, any CDL school, be it company, private or Community College are all about making sure you get your CDL, the real training starts when you get hired with a company and go out on the road with a trainer/finisher/mentor, depending on which your company calls it. -
Hubby went thru a small private school that required over 300 hours. The trainers are excellent. Unfortunately it is in Oak Ridge Tn. The school cost was 2500 which was a low price. Hubby learned a lot before he got with his mentor. We were very pleased. The owner still talks with hubby socially. Good luck to you and your new career.
A21CAV Thanks this. -
Is there a relative or friend who lives in a Swift hiring area that would let you use their address to get into one of the schools? After you solo you can "live" anywhere even if your assigned terminal is thousands of miles away. I have a mailing address where I used to live in San Antonio, my terminal is in Laredo but I literally live in my truck that has been in 41 states in the last three months.
