ok I'm not a trucker here, but I'm wondering if many truck stops nowadays have free wi-fi? is reception usually pretty good, or do all those aluminum trailers and such screw up the connection? for some reason I haven't seen this brought up much (and I've been lurking on here a few months)

Only a few have free Wifi. The reception in my opinion is usually better when your actually in the truck stop but if alot of people are trying to get on its very slow and goes out alot and ive noticed that with free wifi and the wifi you pay for.

4.99 a day at pilot/loves, 24.99/mo or 149.00/year

Sapp Bros is free and so are a few independants

But generally it sucks. You're better off paying for an aircard or using your smartphone.

Maybe the wireless equipment is to blame.
You cant expect a built in wireless card in your laptop to perform from very far away.
How do you who use wifi at stops get the signal? -
Kwiktrip in Wisconsin and a few select other states offer free wifi. Good wifi as well. Pilot's have been known to be crap. Idleaire has decent wifi as well.

I would walk next door to the McDonalds. Free with coffie About 54 cents?
Also sort of cover your computer up leaving. Don' want anyone getting ideas about your truck when you leave. -
Newell's in Newton, KS off of I-135, has an exceptional free Wi-Fi. It's better than my DSL at home.

My experience with "free" Wi-Fi is that it is very spotty. If you're into cheap, you're getting what you pay for with "free."
For me, the internet is an integral part of my business. It's essential enough that I'd be loosing more money than I spend on service via an air card. Knowing what kind of weather you're driving into is essential information, and IMO that alone pays for the cost.SuperLiner Thanks this.
