Is that realistic? I don't like the fact that the major trucking schools/carriers own your a-ss for weeks or months--or years. So, I want to learn at my own pace and not sign any contracts. How likely is that?

Have you gone to school yet? Or are you planning to go to a company school?

I've been driving for about 6 years now and haven't drove OTR not one day. At first your going to have to take alot of crappy jobs with ma and pa type outfits to get your experience. I started out doing seasonal agriculture and had to job hop to follow the different seasons. Now I do heavy haul and have for the last 4 years and am home pretty much every night. Its possible but its going to take alot of patience and hard work before a good local company will give you a chance. Good luck to you!

No, I have not gone to a trucking school. I have however done one day of orientation at Central but, did not like the way things were structured or the contractual obligations. Also, invited to orientation by CRST and CRE but, did not follow through. So I know the usual 2 to 4 weeks of school is not for me. Like I said, I would be interested in local jobs--assuming a Class A license. Just want to know the likelihood of being hired.

After you get your Class A cdl Concrete will hire you. Get with a concrete company that hauls gravel in dump trailers. You'll start with a concrete truck class B. Then ask down the road when you get enough seniority to haul gravel or what ever they haul. Then your using your Class A. Be sure to ask if that is a possibility and how long it will take before you get hired and if it'll fit what your looking for. Had 2 friends that used concrete trucks to move into class A but they were able to leave and get a Class A job without hauling the gravel or asphalt.

You can get a local job, but you should still go to a private trucking school or CC to get training and attain the CDL. That will make it much easier to score a local job once you get licensed. Unless you have tight connections

    Welcome to the forum!

Though it is possible to land a local gig right out of school it is very tough! I wouldn't recommend you spending the money and wasting your time unless you are willing to go over the road. You may have to put in a year over the road before you land a local gig. Only reason I say this is if you don't land a local gig then you are fully prepared to spend some time out there.

Also a lot of local gigs just don't pay. The jobs are out there though you just have to have some luck. Some newbies do occasionally land these gigs and am sure you will hear from a few.

I have 16 years experience and have a tough time finding a decent local gig! Where you live does make a big difference in your success.

    Good luck man!

Also about the contractual deals, I would rather be on the hook with some trucking company as far as paying back the schooling as to opposed to being on the hook with a bank! Its a personal choice though. A bank is going to be more apt to chase you down for the money you owe them than a trucking company.

Yes, that's what I plan to do. Go to a private school that will allow me to learn at my own pace. Then, look for local trucking jobs.
