Air brake test is a skills test, in cab. You need to pass in order to proceed with the rest of the skills and the road test.

It is best for the test, and your life, if you know it 100% forwards and backwards!
That way you can inspect your truck with confidence, and roll into those spot scale inspections with confidence!
I tested in Illinois.
The school instructor pulled the truck to the stop sign at the school exit. We then each got in for our test. But for mine, the examiner told me to let out the clutch, get off the foot brake and roll. Only after moving some did he tell me to pull the hand brake. I did that, stopping the truck. Then he asked me to do it two more times!
There was only about 10 or 15 feet from the sign to the roadway. I was wondering what the heck he was making me do as we were running out of room before I had to enter the traveled lane! All the students and the instructor were wondering what the heck as well! They thought I was completely choking at getting it rolling! Hahahahaha
After the third time, he said, "OK, go ahead." and did not say another word until I parked it back at the school, when he said, "You've completed the test."
Didn't really say I passed...
My point is you have to be ready for whatever they throw at you.

Pick up a CDL study guide at the DMV.

You will go through the brake checks and air down no matter what during the pre trip portion of your test. Also would be good to know all your different air pressures also.
-
I'm in Illinois - Examiners will have you do brake checks, air leakage check, fan down and an air recovery.

Its to make sure that the air is clean in the brake room.....I think?

I do a leakage check after I drink too much coffee. Does that count?
