How does a company get away with demanding 5yrs experience and then be on the lower end of the pay scale? Why would a experienced driver take a pay cut? I'm just askin', not tryin to start a war so everybody be coool.

Can you say Florida and because they can
-
I have a friend that worked there with less then 1 year experience and they never let him come back home to Fl. I think the teams do very well though... Pay in Floriduh is low but if people stop taking the jobs then the companies will have to raise the payscale... just saying....

You know I keep hearing guys use the cop out that Florida is just a low paying state and thats just the way it is and just get use to it but thats not entirely true. All states have their low paying driving jobs and their better higher paying jobs and Florida is no different. If you put your time in and get some experience and keep your record clean you can get a very good paying local gig in Florida, whether it's hauling fuel or running for a grocery chain or even some of the bigger towing companies or auto haulers and even the LTL companies like fedex or ups or southeastern or saia. If you guys think I'm wrong then you either haven't lived in Florida long enough or you just take other peoples word for it and don't put the effort out yourself and find the jobs. I'm not trying to start a argument I'm simply stating the facts and I don't want to mention where I work but our DC is in Sarasota and our drivers start at $18.50/hr and you only need 2 years driving experience and a good driving record and criminal record which you should have already if you truly are trying to find a good paying job and not crap job running a dump truck. But some of you out there want the big money but don't want to do anything but hold the steering wheel because "you are a driver" and nothing else, well for those of you that fall into this category all I can say is good luck and hope you like running that dump truck for $15 bucks a hour. I love my state and hate when others put it down, if you are unhappy then move. Be safe guys and gals.

poorboy... I'm glad you found a good paying gig, I too have a good paying job and am fortunate to have it! That being said though... I will still state that GENERALLY speaking Florida pays lower then a lot of other areas, yes everywhere has low paying jobs but after living here for almost 10 years I can say that I have seen very low offers and you have to look harder and further then in my home state of NJ. I moved here with 20+ years of experience and a clean license and history and got offers around 30 cpm! I worked for that back in 76 when I started out! The scarey part is there are people here that STILL offer that same $.30!!! Dump trucks in my area try to get drivers for $9 and hour and local companies try to do the same... Maybe in the bigger cities pay is better. Towing companies here also offer what I consider to be low, $10 and hour. The jobs that pay well are gone before you can get in the door usually or never posted anywhere, this is where you need to get out and knock on doors which is how I have found my best jobs through my career anyway. If I see a company I walk in and ask! Hopefully I'll be where I am for years to come.
I agree you have to keep your stuff clean and that there are jobs available that pay well but... I think you also need to accept that as long as drivers work for free there will never be top pay anywhere. In this economy and high unemployment it's tough to get ahead, for everyone.
Good luck and stay safe!! -
You have to understand that there are people who come to FL and would love to work for $9 an hour... :/

It says 1 year experience on their website and it's contingent on the other factors (criminal record, driving record, etc.). Maybe they can hire you with less than a year.
