Alpine is good stuff, my number 2 choice. They just charge a little much and do some things I don't like. But, I currently have an Alpine in my truck. Must mean something. Lol

My research and shopping has begun!
I am assuming that most HU have a Front and Rear connection for speakers, but what about the mid's? I figure I will be better off to wire them into the amp, along with the subwoofer... -
Cool! Post some pix when you get er done!
-
The mids? Well, if you get component speakers (separate tweeter and woofer) they come with a crossover that'll have the proper outputs for them. It takes the main line from the HU or Amp and filters the frequencies for you. If your getting coaxial speakers (tweeter and woofer in the same speaker) then they have one input and has resistors to split the frequencies for you. If you are using an amp though...you don't even use the speaker connections from the HU...you use RCA's from the HU straight to the amp, then you run speaker wire from there

EagleEye, that is what I suspected. It makes more sense, just wasn't sure
I stopped by a local stereo shop with the truck and spoke with the owner. He was way cool. I got some knowledge from him and advice. Got a plan of action for the system. Going to replace the cab 4x6 with 6", keep the mid at 6.5", replace the sleeper with 6", possibly 6x9" and build a custom sealed ported sub box for two 10" subs. Also will be able to connect the tv and ps3 to system! BOOM!!! It just so happened that he had a Volvo he was finishing up that had a similar setup...sounded great!
His prices were a little high at the shop, but said he charges flat rate for installation vs hourly. I was going to attempt this myself, but I think I will pay a little more to have it done right. Going to cost a little more than I planned, but I think I will like it in the long run.
I am headed out on a two week trip then have him start it when i get back on my two weeks off.
I will def post pics!!! -
I got a suggestion for ya. Im guessing your going with a subwoofer amp, but not a 4 channel amp yet? If so...
While they are dragging all the wiring under the flooring. Have them lay down an extra set of RCA cables, remote turn on etc... This way, since its already tore apart (the hardest part) if you decide to upgrade again you can just add hardware and not have to worry about the wiring. I think "speedwire or 9 conductor wire" is what they call it. Heck, for that matter have them drop a couple extra sets of RCA cables in, and then skys the limit what you can add to your HU. TV, another game console, Ipod control from sleeper etc...
I would get a HU that has both front and rear aux hookups. That way you can have your game system hooked up from behind and the wiring buried under your carpeting. And youll can use the front aux usb or speaker jack for you cell phone or mp3 stuff. -
Never use speed wire unless it is absolutely a must. A truck is big enough to run all the speaker wire you need. You only need one power wire and a distribution block for each amp. One remote wire is enough too. But, a pro us doing the install...I'm sure he knows what to do

Kansas, yea my $1k limit went to about $1500. That is just amps, speakers and subs. No install, custom sub box or wiring. I figure I will be about $2k when all said and done. Amp #1 is going to be a 5-channel for Front/Mid/Sleeper speakers and the second a 4-channel for subs only.
Haven't decided on a HU yet. The local shop has a big JVC and Pioneer inventory, but I can order just about anything from them. Haven't found one that screams "BUY ME" yet.
Dang good advice about running extra RCA's.
Eagle is def right. According to the installer, One power wire to a distro is perfectly fine... allows for easy expansion. -
Well, if those are your 2 choices of HU...I would stay away from pioneer. They have really gone to crap the last few years. I would look at a JVC Arsenal KD-A95BT. I have first hand experience with this deck and pioneer as well. This deck is pretty slick, has BT audio so you can stream music from your phone along will getting hands free calls, etc, etc...I almost got one before I left my last car audio job. Here's the link for ya
