I did start as a L/O. May be the exception that proves the rule if I am successful, but like most people post here, you should have business experience as well as a good knowledge of the trucking industry before making the commitment. I have met many L/O's that after a 5 minute conversation prove in their words that they are not cut out for running a business or are not properly knowledgable enough to be a L/O.

If you are entertaining the L/O option, make sure that you go into it with eyes wide open, as well with the wise words of IP an U2exit that spending time as a company driver would be a better option to start off in this industry.

Just how well are you doing? You say "if I'm successful.."

Maybe I'm just adding 2 plus 2 and getting 5 but, I see you are taking the TNT course...

A little fast maybe with way less than a year under your belt?

First thing out of every L/O's fleet manager's mouth to a struggling Lease driver is the suggestion that they should train. Is this the case?

I have been reading all of the posts from you as well as IP, U2exit and ORD. The information and advice provided in the posts are a gold mine of information about what it takes to be successful in the industry. I had noticed that you were fairly new and were also a L/O. Is there an overriding factor you considered to go L/O instead of company? As always thanks for your time and advice.

Nope, not struggling. I have been an instructor for the US Army, teaching leadership, vehicle recovery and heavy equipment operation. I have 6 years of being an instructor and have become a master instructor for the Army. I understand the learning process, as well as the tasks that are required. I also have quite a few years of life & business experience that enhance my abilities here.

I cannot call myself a success with such short time, and I am not that naive to do such a thing. In my FM's evaluation, I am doing everything right and he wants me to teach drivers. He believes that I can do the job well, and will produce successful drivers. Like I said, I may be the exception that proves the rule. Won't find out until there are drivers out there that I have trained, driving with a high degree of competence. My product as a TNT will be those drivers, and if I do the job correctly, those drivers will get their own trucks and become successful as well.

For me, this is my plan. My timeline. Supported by my FM not because I am "one of those guys" that need to make more money, but because my FM as well as my trainer have identified something in my conduct to garner their support.

As stated above, one of the overriding factors was my trainers recommendation. He not only taught me the ways of Prime, but taught me quite a bit about being a L/O and seemed quite confident that I would do well. I also have the funds to support the operation, as it would be foolish to try to make it without having operating cash. Even though I am new here, and as a driver, I have knowledge and experience of logistics and freight management, maintenance management, and business management.
