It is what it is! Don't expect a college type atmosphere! For the most part all the CDL mills are the same. They are going to teach you the basics and get you your CDL. You are not a professional driver at that point in time. The school taught you just enough to get you prepared to go out with your trainer of your chosen company. You will learn more on day one with your trainer than the whole three weeks you spent in school!
School is a blast though and you will have a lot of fun learning to drive that big truck! The first time you sit in that big truck and look in the side mirror you will be pretty excited! I know I was! In fact, the school I was going to attend had a truck fair in which 20 or so drivers from different companies showed up to the school with their trucks and let future potential students sit in their trucks and talk about the lifestyle. The school did this from time to time to get newbies to sign up for the school. This was actually the first time I got to sit in a big truck. It was a Kenworth studio W-900 and was driven by a husband/wife team for Honey Transport. They let me get up in their truck and sit in the drivers seat and when I looked in the side mirror I was instantly sold on the career! It was such an awesome feeling that something that huge goes down the highway at 70mph! It was a beautiful rig too! All decked out and the inside (where they lived) was a sweet set up!
I kid you not, I signed up for school within 10 minutes of sitting in that truck! The rest was history!
You're going to have a blast man! Wish I were in your shoes! I would love to do it all over again!
The school basically consists of the first few days is usually book work and getting your temporary license. You will go over logbooks, safety, pre-trips, map reading and trip planning etc... Once you get out in the yard you will practice backing and shifting and such. After you get a grasp on that they will start taking you out on the road for real world practice. Usually 4-6 students will all pile up in the truck along with the instructor and everyone will take turns driving around all day. Can be a little scary when driving with others. There is always some chump who can't drive whatsoever! Feel bad for the instructor!
After the three weeks or so go by you will take your test and with any luck get your license. During the three weeks you will also have recruiters from different companies come and try to brainwash you into coming to their company! The school also gives you time during class to fill out apps for pre-hires. Do your homework! Don't just apply to the companies that the school is offering or suggesting. Keep in mind that they get kick-back for every student they send to those companies. Don't just choose a company because the school recommended them or the recruiter came and talked to the class!
Last but not least, you will most likely meet some of the most interesting, diverse people during your time in school! That was one of my most favorite parts!
Good luck man!

At least you'll be going out in the summer and will get some experience before winter hits. I started during the winter of 1998 and I wish I had more experience before trying to tackle those icy roads...
