I'm in school. Yesterday was the first time I've sat in the drivers seat of a truck. I've never driven a manual transmission before, let alone double clutch. I was a little nervous, but if you saw my leg you'd think I'd never been more nervous in my life. It was almost shaking clear off the clutch. I know eventually I'll get the timing of it down, but that shaking was awful. Would work boots with ankle support help ease this? Any other suggestions? Or is it just a case of getting used to a different way of shifting? Thanks.

I would say it's probably just nerves. My left leg would get shaky, but only when practicing backing for hours on end - that was simply because of having to use my left leg a lot to control the truck's speed.
I bet tomorrow your leg will settle down some, lol. -
I did the same thing at first, leg shaking and sore as heck the next day, like FemaleDriver said.. backing all day is the worst. It will go away when you learn that you don't have to clutch all the way to the floor.

I suggest a shoe with a strong sole. Sneakers are a bit too flexible. You are supposed to be nervous and not pick it up quick. Actually, you are supposed to be better off than those who shifted cars. It is supposed to be easier for you to pick up double clutching than they. Relax. You will miss gears a lot. Don't panic, and don't force. Learn what to do if you miss the gear.
This is what helped me, another fellow who had never stroked gears: Look at the gear shift pattern, copy it on a piece of standard letter paper. Put it on the arm rest of your Lay-z-boy. Repeat after me,"Clutch, neutral. Clutch, Gear." Say that at standard speed, not fast. That should be about the speed you shift.
So, start with your hand on top of first gear on the paper. And talk it through. Clutch, neutral. Clutch, gear. Through the gears. Make sure you are putting your foot down for each "clutch" and picking it up as you say "neutral" and "gear." Do not forget to switch up for the higher gears. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Until you get it in your head.
Hope this helps. -
just remember, double clutching is a rythem movement 1-2-3. [1 clutch in, stick to neutral] [2 clutch out] [3 clutch in, shift to next gear]. It might help you to think of it as dancing with your left leg and right arm. It will get easier with time and practice. Soon enough, youll forget double clutching and be floating gears in no time.

I used to have the same problem with backing. I got over that pretty quick. In a typical day now on the Dollar General account I will back a do
Now after I start rolling I float shift only using the clutch slightly to release the torque on the drive train to float to the gear especially if the jake is on.This saves wear on the clutch. -

Keep your foot off the pedal until you're ready to shift. After each time you make a gear change place that foot on the floor. If you're riding the clutch your leg will shake. A good boot will help. I liked the steel toed wellington style slip resistant by Wolverine the best. It was easy to slip on and off and held up very well around fuels.

It was your very first day! Every day will get better and better.
Just to add to all those good tips I would say to just make sure your seat is in the right position and is at the right elevation. Maybe play around with it to see if different positions help you. I'm short and have stocky legs and for me I find it best to let all the air out of the seat with it slap to the ground! I like to sit back further from the wheel and this gives me a little better leverage.
