Hello everyone. i recently bought an '85 KW w900 day cab with no wet kit. Its in great condition for the $ i spent...the only thing is that it doesnt have a wet line, so i wanted to get a job hauling out of the port in NJ to get the money to buy a wet line but the truck is too old to be allowed in the port. So i found a company that was hiring and then i guess they changed their mind (idk why) and told me it was because their insurance would not cover me. Later on i found out that we both have the same insurance company? Then i thought i found another company called consolidated lumber transport (CLT aka JRC) only to do some research and find out alot of shady things about them.So now im stuck and im not sure where to go or what to do, but i do know that if i had a wet line it would open up alot of doors. Does anybody have any suggestions to where/who i can haul for that does local or regional at most? ANY help would be immensely appreciated.
need some advice on getting my truck rolling.

you may be able to try a local trash hauler, from one transfer station to another, or out of state.

Check local junkyards, etc for a used wetline setup. Make real sure the PTO unit fits your trans.... the box for a Spicer 13OD has different gearing than a Rockwell 10 Direct for example. You may have to fabricate hoses depending on where you mount the tank, etc. Heck, I once bought a complete setup for $500 at a Pawn Shop.

Well although JRC CLT is known for being shady, that doesn't mean money can't be made with them. If you got everything else all set up it shouldn't be hard to get on with them. You could see if brookfield auto wreckers in elmsford has a pto. They tear apart lots of trucks. What are you planning on using awet kit for? Lot of competition for construction sites down by you..

@Gizmo_man....i dont have a wet line yet though wouldnt it be better to haul trash with?
thanks kittyfoot.
yeah your right im almost done with the application process all i gotta do is get the truck checked out by them and pick a trailer, but im already working at a job now and i didnt want to quit to drive the truck and not get paid or run into any 'shady' issues. your also right about brookfield i completely forgot about them. i didnt really have anything in particular lined up that involves a wet line but it does make my truck more versatile with what kind of work i can pick up. -
That's true. I haven't yet heard of anyone not getting paid, thought I don't talk to guys from there often enough that they'd be sharing that type of info with me. A wet kit would make your truck more versatile...however, if you aren't using it its just extra weight to drag around/something else to break or give you trouble. If you are hesitant to quit your day job, consider that you just threw a pile of money at your own truck. To half step is an unsuccessful plan. Get lined up with something and go at it full throttle. You can always go back to being an employee in my opinion. Do you have your own authority? If you are leased to clt it means they can't give you a bum rate from their charged rate, but whether you lease to them or just use them as a broker you do have to be on point to find what you can reload from any given area either through them or from another broker or your own clientele. They do have quite a bit of freight going into the city especially now that they are the only ones pulling out of firestone bristol. You could do that with a daycab, make money and be ome every nite/ in an area you'd likely be familiar with. Did you sign up with the thomaston office? According to a couple of the guys from there that I've spoken with, that's where they have the longest standing contracts and treat you well. Granted that's hearsay at this point. Just what's been saidto me.

Out of curiousity, what was the company that changed their mind on you? I don't know if you can private message yet, just interested and like to know who's hiring in the nearby area.

@ruthless-well when you put it like that it doesnt sound like a smart thing to do. your right i could always go back to being an employee is what i keep preaching to myself to get over this hesitation anxiety about quitting my day job...no i dont have my own authority im looking into getting it though...im not sure where thomaston office is but the office i keep calling and talking back and forth with is in mass but im taking my truck to a CT location to get 'looked over'.....ill try to send it to you if i can.
-
Palmer mass more than likely. Thomaston is the main office I guess, dispatchers are all over the place. Do you know what you need to average for all miles to be profitable?
Don't be afraid to take a leap. Gotta start somewhere, gotta start sometime. Might as well do it here and now. I never want to be the guy saying "If only I would have..." I have enough experience with that already in life. -
well today i found out that im going to thomaston tommorow friday morning to get things looked over so well see. and no im not sure because the price per mile changes depending on the freight/trailer/tarp or all of those. yeah thats why i bought the truck i told myself i wanna try this now its what i love to do and i dont really have any responsibilities unno no wife, mortgage, kids one car note but nothing major and im 23 well i just turned 24 so i wanna try this now while im young.
