A couple days ago the driver complained that all of his clutch free pedal was gone and it seemed to happen all of a sudden. I crawled under the truck and found that the bell housing bolts, (two had broken off) and most of the rest had somehow loosened up and the top of the transmission was gapped about an inch. I drove it to the shop and fixed it, but now the driver complains that it doesn't like to come out of gear. I double checked the clutch adjustment and it was right on. I'm afraid when the trans. loosened up it may have bent a shaft internally.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

When the trans backs away from the flywheel housing that far the input shaft comes out of the pilot bearing causing the input shaft to loose support at the front of the shaft. This causes stress on the front bearing on the input shaft and front bearing retainer as it is now supporting the weight of the trans. The pocket bearing in the input shaft supports the front of the mainshaft. Without proper support of the mainshaft through the pocket bearing and the front bearing on the input shaft the mainshaft alignment could be compromised. I would look for the cause of the problem at the front of the trans and check for shift for wear. Does the clutch release properly?

Thanks bender......I double checked and the clutch does not seem to be releasing properly. Perhaps my issue is the clutch and not the trans.? Maybe i could try driving the truck and floating the gears.....if this works maybe it is the clutch.....if it doesn't work it sounds like trans. issues..?
    Does that make sense?

I think that's a good plan of attack to better isolate the cause of the problem. When the trans is an inch away from the flywheel housing it's right at the point of the input shaft being out of the pilot bearing with no support to the front of the input shaft. This would allow the weight of the trans to hang from the clutch disc hubs and possibly bend the clutch discs.

    Floyd Thanks this.

Might have wrecked the pilot bearing and it still is not supporting the shaft.

    Update:
I had a chance to test drive the truck this morning and the clutch is definately not disengaging properly....
I can float the gears no problem, but as soon as you try to use the clutch it just wont come out of gear unless everything is just right.
Sounds like my issue is most likely in the clutch and not the trans. which is good.

On a side note.....when installing a new clutch does the orientation of the buttons on the ceramic clutch discs make any difference?
    Thanks.

Just install the clutch with the adjusting lock ring down onto the nice clean flywheel with a new pilot bearing in the flywheel.

    The causes of clutch not releasing are;
Disc hub hanging up on input shaft splines.
Center plate hanging up on drive lugs in flywheel.
    Bent discs.
    Improper clutch adjustment.

Ideally, the buttons should all line up when installing a new clutch.
