Is a visual inspection an inspection? Yes? Then doesn't 396.11 require a driver inspection?
Revelation911, I respect your knowledge on DOT issues, and the court system. However, your holier than thou attitude is wearing thin.
If I get banned, I get banned, but it had to be said.
Since I have a total lack of knowledge, and you have all the answers, I'll just PM you all my questions.

You are going to need to show me that regulation!

REALLY? You have never been through an inspection in a coop I guess....when that donut chomping belly crawler goes under and measures the travel!

I think you just contradicted yourself....all in the same post...made it easy to see your switch!!!!

Do you really think a company taking 400.00 from a driver is good??
Answer this question in doing your daily pre and post trip inspections can you honestly say whether your pushrod travels one or two inches?
Would you feel the same about paying your 400.00 dollars out if you were the original poster?

nope, haven't been pulled into the scales yet. other then a level 3 and permits check. but he can measure all he wants. he won't find MY brakes out of adjustment. i won't put up with having to use higher then normal pressure burning up my own brakes that i ahve to spend my own money replacing.

your profile says 17 years. you should know by now. that slack travel comes with brake gap. wider the gap. higher the slack travel. keep that gap as close as possible and you'll never have to worry about your brakes being out of adjustment. and mr. coop giving you a ticket.

that should be common knowledge for you by now.

I appreciate everyone's input! It has shed great light on rules and regulations. It's not just slack adjusters though, it's maintenance as a whole. It took me weeks of begging and pleading to get steer tires. The only reason I got them was because of the 72 hour scale watch that was starting up a couple weeks ago. The company tries to cut back on spending and it's the maintenance of the trucks that suffers. I'm sitting in a truck in Texas right now 1,300 miles away from home and had to add 3 gallons of oil to this truck. And it took 3 gallons last week too. They just keep putting things off until something blows up. Our trucking boss is great and will go to bat for us whenever possible but the money issue is above his pay grade unfortunately. I'm usually a local driver with the exception of this week and they run us ragged. We don't get days off. I know I could simply refuse to work because I'm out of hours but I'm just trying to make a living. 16-18 hours a day in this truck is common with this company. They have us log loading and unloading as off duty while we're outside of the truck, helping load, and strapping down. I understand the fact that I would be doing myself a favor by leaving but while truck drivers are a dime a dozen, that's not always the scenario for truck driving jobs. Decent jobs anyway. The pay here is decent, the equipment as a whole is just mistreated.

The windshield in my truck has been cracked for months. That's another example even.

If read my post you will see that I never said the driver should just pay the money. With the other info the OP posted about maintenance, I do agree with daf105, might be time for job hunting.

After your company has a few trucks that have been caught, they bump the fine up figuring that you as the company should be informing the drivers of the restriction. How do I know? I saw the summons.
