Ron:
I'm just like you. 1 week ago I started asking the same questions you could be asking. You have a definite advantage over me as a complete newbie even with only your DZ experience but that is just the start. I learned a lot about the industry and let me say that being in the oil patch is definitely the best way to learn. But lots of information is in the posts that now cover 70 pages starting in September 2011. Reading these posts is a quick way to get your feet wet. You'll notice on the left, the user name of each contributor and more importantly their experience. Lots of good mentors like prairie_boy just to name 1. Also highly recommend that you click the thanks button when they take the time to answer your questions.
You'll learn in the 70 pages the type of driver jobs in oil patch and the terminology and the hot towns.
Hope this helps.
Ted
PS In Alberta AZ is a Class 1 and DZ is Class 3. Just add A for airbrakes for 1A and 3A

So you invest in them, would you drive for them?
I thought they were a decent company? I don't know anyone who works for them. -
Small correction; air brakes are integral to an AB Class 1 so there is no endorsement and it is not possible to hold an AB Class 1 without air brakes, so it is just referred to as a "Class 1". The "A" endorsement in Alberta actually refers to "adequate lenses" and the air brake endorsement for any other license class is "Q".Canadian-ay and wallyron Thank this.

I wouldn't hesitate one bit. Maybe Pinner had a bad experience. Pinner is a good oil patch driver.jonboy29 Thanks this.

With military experience and a class 1 license, it won't be hard to find work in the oilfield. If your interested in well servicing companies, they are in full swing recruitment right now. What area of Alberta you interested in? Will help narrow down what base managers you can apply to.wallyron Thanks this.
-
Boomtruckin', thanks for the great info. How long does "full swing recruitment" continue? I expect to be trained up with all tickets and Class one by early to mid august. At that point I intend on loading up my SUV and heading for the great province of Alberta. Is August still prime time for a newbie like myself or getting a bit late?wallyron Thanks this.
-
It continues for as long as it has to, I would be guessing if I told you a date. But August is still a good time to apply, get trained and become a competent oil field driver.
They are hiring class 1 & 3 drivers as of now, but that may change soon to include class 5. -
I would apply and try to get in now with your class 5. Get paid while being trained. Get some bonuses.
-
Boomtruckin' and SK306 thanks for the great info. I would apply right now with my class 4/5 but I have already started my class one training and spent the money. I've completed PST, CSTS, H2S alive and will be adding First Aid, WHMIS and was thinking of adding GODI.
Any others I should add? -
Make sure it's standard first aid with CPR.
