Hey guys, I searched for an answer but couldn't find one, so here goes:
My brother and I are buying a truck (he's an experienced driver), but we're wondering if there is an advantage to buying a truck in a specific state? If we buy in a state with a low/nonexistent sales tax, or a state where trucks are generally priced lower, how do we go about getting plates? By comparison, when we bought a passenger car in New York, we had a choice -- pay tax in NY and get NY plates or pay tax in NJ and get NJ plates. But either way they would not give us plates before we paid sales tax on the car. Is it the same way with commercial trucks, and does it even make sense to shop across different states?
Thanks a lot,
-dk

Class 8 trucks are exempt from sales tax in NJ.

I live in SC and bought mine in GA. They wouldn't collect sales tax from me since I was taking it out of state. I had to pay it when I registered it in SC.
dktruck Thanks this. -
Got it, thanks a lot guys, that answers my question.

Really? Wow I did not know that are there any other states like that?
-
Don't know about the details for NJ, but in GA you can get sales tax exemption if you are a carrier with authority. I've heard many other states do that.
-
In TX if you register your truck with apportioned tags you don't have to pay sales tax.

Even if you lease to a carrier ask them if you can use there MC or DOT number (depends on state OH is MC) and when you go to the title office ask for an exempt form and you should be good

Does anyone know if Wisconsin has an exemption for commercial trucks also? I can use the MC number of the carrier I lease to. A dealer told me there is no way around sales tax but I am getting different info. I am going to try to get in touch with the state dmv, and hope to find someone who actually knows. Would like to hear from anyone who has experience titling a truck in Wisconsin. I would have a certificate of manufacture and have to get the title.

When I bought my truck in Kansas I simply filled out a tax exemption form with my carriers numbers. Sent a copy to the state with my title only application because I got base plates through Illinois.
oicu812 Thanks this.
