After I was all moved in Friday night to my new truck, I had plenty of time to get it organized, nap, shower, walk 6 miles, go to Mal Wart twice, eat at the restaurant twice, go to a grocery store south of Salem, watch 4 movies... They finally got me rolling late Monday morning. See what kind of layover pay they cough up. Should be in the neighborhood of $400 if $15/hr after the first 24hrs holds true. We'll see. At least now I'm heading to Ft. Worth, so I won't be anywhere near the Brooks Vortex for a while.![]()

uhhhhh....NO!
DETENTION pay is what you're thinking of, and it's only $10/hr
Layover is only $52/day -
And you only get layover if you were showing available.
-
And you only get the layover or the detention if you make sure to prod your DM about submitting the paperwork for it. Sometimes with a cattle prod. At least that is what I have heard about the Brooks DM's. Mine is good about it and takes care of it before I ever ask. I know others do as well.

Huh, well, then that 10 hours of $15/hr layover pay I got while dispatched on a load was a fluke?! Got to shipper (CG Roxanne in Salem, NC) and it was a terrible cluster f*#k... Like 20 trucks, and one guy running a single forklift. Had to park in the middle of the highway between 2 blind corners; almost witnessed a head-on collision. Anyhow, there was no way they were getting to me before my hours ran out, so I had to leave and park down the road until the morning. May paid me $150 for the 10 hour layover while on a dispatch... And yeah, I was shown available Sat. morn @ 8am; got my loads Mon. morn @ 9:30am. I'll let you know what shows up on the pay stub tomorrow.

You got detention pay for that other load. Detention is when you get caught at a shipper or receiver and are detained through no fault of your own for 5 or more hours. Surprised you got it honestly. In three years I think I got paid detention twice. I know I qualified for it at least a dozen or more times too.
platinum Thanks this. -
May doesn't pay $15 an hr for detention, it's $10 an hr. Someone made a mistake, don't worry they'll figure it out soon enough and take the overage back out of another check

Stop and think about, why would May pay $150 for 10 hrs of detention and yet only $50 for a 24 hr layover? -
I got stuck at countless walmarts among others never been paid it.
-
Most of the detention/layover I've not seen one penny. Glad somebody made a mistake that actually benefited me, and made up (a little) for all that free labor they get... I did actually get $104 layover for the weekend at Brooks, so that's something. Seems like my DM is starting to not be new any more and is taking care of business with authoritay!
Now, if they can just get the miles up... But reading "The Trucker" newspaper, it's no wonder the 11 Western drivers are sitting a lot; freight has been way off in the West. Glad I'm heading into Texas and busier freight lanes. Hopefully it will pick up for everyone.
Be safe out there ya'll! -
In order to get detention you must send arrival call before appointment time, a two hour notice via free form that you are not loaded/unloaded, and another free form stating the same thing at the four hour mark. If you don't do those three steps you will not see any detention pay. Plus the pay starts at the end of the fourth hour, but you will only see that $10 if you send your empty call at the end of the fifth hour or later. Since I started taking these steps as outlined in the train the trainer class, I have been seeing detention pay. I had never before that though.
As far as layover pay, most of the time you will need to send in a free form asking for it, depending on the DM. Mine has been great about taking care of my layover pay, she is always on the ball with it.
