After completeing the apprenticeship program, are you allowed to go to the tanker division or do you need to do time as a reefer driver? Are miles available for the tanker or is it harder to get good miles in this division?
Also, I know you have a rider policy, but does it start right after your upgrade or do you have to solo for a while before a spouse can ride along?

From what Ive heard you can go into the Tanker division after upgrade. Ask a recruiter to be sure. I believe after upgrade you can get a rider policy. Not sure on the cost.

Ive heard that they dont get the miles reefer does. But I also heard the same bout flatbed, which has proven false. Tanker does pay more per mile than reefer does.

Any idea if you have to extend your training once you upgrade if going to tanker division. I suppose prime training is in the reefer division?

There is additional training for anyone wanting to go tanker or flatbed. You can do PSD/TNT in either Reefer or Flatbed. Not sure about tanker. In my opinion you should get through TNT before you try tanker. Dealing with the "surge" is difficult. Ive never driven a tanker. Only a fire truck with 1000 gallons of water onboard. Driving one of our tankers would be much more difficult due to having a higher weight. These tanks are smooth bore. No baffles to help with surge.
Also heard a rumor that new tankers are on the way... These will be spread axles, which means a higher weight. Should be able to scale 40,000 on the trailer with those. -
Thanks ORD. I had a friend who is a retired OTR driver say that if I ever got into trucking, I should look into tanks. Said that deliveries were usually easier. A lot of pull thru type of situations. Don't know if this is true or not. I would think that delivery times would be more "daytime" hours?

Ive heard the same thing about pull throughs. Not sure about the hours. I do know another Prime driver was told to get some winter experience before switching over. The runs are to be made whether or not the weather is bad. Unless the road is shut down, youre expected to be there.backster Thanks this.

I do know that you have to be solo for 90 days before you can have a rider. That's the only part of the question I know the answer to.
