Is it a good idea to get a truck and get an overhaul done on it? Truck i'm looking at is a 97 Pete Exhd with an N-14 435 Cummins 15spd but it has 1.5 million miles on.. The body of the truck is in awesome shape, but would buying it and overhauling it be the best thing to do or you think this truck could be a lemon?

Depends on what they want $$$$ for a truck that needs an overhaul. Climb under it and see what else has been replaced on the truck and ask for receipts. N-14's can be overhauled cheaply. Might be worth it, might not..

A friend of mine overhauled his N14 a couple of years ago and spent about $10,000. That did not include new injectors.

With 1.5 Million on it, it probably has been inframed already. Most N14s go around 900,000-1 million before an overhaul is needed. I would run it, keep an eye on oil consumption, keep up with valve and injector adjustments, and maybe do some oil samples. The N14 is a great engine and will go a loooong time if taken care of.

Also consider 1.5 mil on the running gear and suspension etc.

You really start having problems with externals on engines, suspensions , trans, rears etc when you start getting up there in miles. Decide what its worth and how much you are willing to spend and check itout really well.

price a crate replacement motor and ask if you still think it's worth it.

N14 is a great engine, I drove a city p and d truck with one in it for a while. Like the others have said , if you think the rest of the truck is good to go and get it cheap then could be a good starter truck. Keep in mind though that there's a lot of little things that will nicklel and dime you on a truck with high mileage. I say if you are happy with the overall condition and it's only the engine needs money spent at this time and you get it cheap( as in VERY) then go for it!

I would add that should you decide to purchase the truck that you wait until it actually needs rebuilding. With 1.5 million miles I would expect that the engine may have already had work performed. If the current owner doesn't have any paperwork you can get the engine serial number or truck vin number and take it to a dealer. If work was done at an authorized dealer then you should be able to find out what was done.
