I have a 2003 Volvo vnl with Volvo engine. My a/c blows hot out. Compressor is fine and has plenty of freon. A shop told me it was the index unit. Can't get fixed for three days! Anyways is there a way I can bypass the index unit to get some relief from this OK heat! Thanks gals and guys!
Help a lady out in need please! A/c issues

I'm just a shade tree mechanic of 35 years. I never heard of an index unit? Sounds to me like a hustle.
Maybe one of the AC knowledgeable mechanics can answer better.
Somethings you can check. Have someone turn the AC on while you listen to the compressor. It will click when it engages. That would indicate the compressor and freon are okay.
Do you see any lines freezing up? The expansion valve could be stuck closed. The high pressure side could be plugged. Another possibility is the blend door under the dash is not working and is stuck on the heater side.
Let someone else post. But I would be thinking about another shop.
There are no short cuts or bypasses. A leak you could do the home recharge and get a few days out of it is about all.
I would try to get a motel if you could. There's a major heat wave here in TN. I bet it's hot there. -
Oh ok it is an actual computer for the a/c. It's called a control unit. The shop said u could bypass but said he couldn't do it because of ins. We gotta load in Ar so no hope ffor me until we get home. Thank you do much for responding. Btw it does kick on and no lines are frozen so idk. But thanks again.

I TOO HAVE nEVER HEARD OF A INDEX UNIT. On some VN,s there is a A/C monitoring device it will indicate by what lights are on or flashing what may be wrong with the A/C . It is a small black box with green light or red on the fire wall drivers side upper under the cowling for W/wipers. Written on it will give you a explanation of what the lights are indicating. But first is the clutch engaging on the A/C comprresor ?

Ok it is the a/c monitoring device. The shop called it an index box. And the shop said on one side it only showed 6 volt and other side 12 so idk. I do know the shop said you can bypass the box so it will work manually. He said their is a malfunction in the box because he checked everything else. I know the compressor clicks like it wants to come on. And it has freon. Not sure about how to check clutch.

The monitoring device I'm referring to has nothing to do with the operation or not of the A/C. If you hear the A/C clutch engage is it staying engaged or quickly disconnecting. Check for the monitoring device on the firewall . What are the lights indicating ? Is the blower motor working ? Where did they check for voltage if you seen them checking.

I didn't see where he was checking the voltage. Sometimes it will show 3 blinks which is the short circuit. And yes the blower is working. The clutch is not turning. The clutch is the outside circular piece on compressor right? I'm dumb when it comes to this stuff. It worked great one day then it won't work at all. We had a Togo switch hooked up to bypass some of the wiring but it quit working as well.

Sounds like the AC clutch coil has burned up and won't engage the AC compressor clutch.

So what can I do to somewhat fix the issue until I get to a shop or home?
-
The way I'm reading this is that the AC control box was sending low voltage to the clutch coil which overheated the coil and it quit working. Then you ran a wire supplying 12+ volts to the clutch coil and it began to work again for a day, but the damage had already been done previous to running the additional wire.
The only way that you can make it work temporarily until you get home is to tack weld the AC clutch together for permanent engagement and then replace the AC clutch and coil assy and control unit when you get home.CondoCruiser Thanks this.
