I may be wrong but i thought the lineage was on the block-bottom end......6.9,7.3 idi is a stroked 6.9, and the major change idi to di was same bottom end different cyclinder heads to allow for the injectors.

Also to my other post(forgive my boredom im getting loaded) 94.5 to 97 had a mechanical pump driven off the cam shaft in situated down in the valley. The super duty years all had electric pumps.

Isn't the 7.3 IDI a bored out version of the 6.9 IDI not stroked.

    Yep. Bore, not stroke.
    6.9L bore is 4.00"; 7.3L bore is 4.11".

I had two of the 6.9's, several 7.3 IDI, and several 7.3 Powerstroke motors. (some bought new, but some were well used) I've never had an engine problem. As others have said, I've changed a lot of small parts, but nothing major.
I currently have a '97 F-250 and a '03 F-350, both 7.3 Powerstrokes, and plan on keeping them until they are beyond repair. (and they will probably outlast me) I love the 7.3, and don't want anything else.
