Okay, I laid in bed awake half the night last night wondering how to ask this question. The only way I could come up with is to just ask straight out. Here goes. :biggrin_25524:

My husband and I are just starting our “journey” to become team drivers. We live in San Diego (yes, the land of fruits and nuts). We’re hoping to start with Interstate in Washington, at least that’s our first choice.

We’re middle aged, both of us have been in our current professions for all of our adult lives, stable, grown kids with 1 grandchild (so far).

I hate that I even have to ask this question, but reality is what it is…..does an interracial couple of a chance in heaven of getting a job trucking? Will anyone hire us?

I’m aware that on the road there will be issues, but we really aren’t concerned with that. Used to stares, sneers, etc. BUT, can we get hired?

Please, can anyone speak to this? Thanks SO much.

Why would that even be an issue in getting hired?

While I can't speak from personal experience, or even third party experience, I would be utterly shocked (and appalled) if you two have a hard time getting hired. It is against the law, yanno.

    LodiKen Thanks this.

not everyone has come into this millenium. It's kept us from doing/achieving a few things in life.

well i won't be naive enough to say it won't be any problem but i really don't think it would be that difficult.
If they won't hire you because of this you probably don't want to work for somebody like that anyway. I think you will be fine if you don't give up.

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance before we quit our jobs and go thousands in debt for school.:biggrin_25521:

I posted this question this morning, but I think I posted it in the wrong Thread. Here it is again:

I can't speak for the entire industry, and obviously you have more experience in this area than almost anyone who will probably answer this question. But for the most part, trucking is one of the most color blind and sexuality blind businesses that I know of. Women work in this business and do not encounter any kind of glass ceiling as long as they are capable of doing the work. Minorities of all types work in this industry, and do not encounter any more prejudices in their job than they would if they worked at something else. Interracial couples are not unheard of in this industry, and are not likely to raise any more interest than they would walking down the street of your hometown.

Obviously, there are going to be areas of the country where this can be more of a problem than others. There are still parts of the south where interracial couples are not very common. And if you are off the main highway areas, there could possibly be some issues, but it's really not a very high likelyhood.

I have never seen any signs of racial prejudice in trucking, and while my experience may be limited by virtue of me being a middle class middle aged white guy, I have plenty of friends of various colors and not one of them has ever brought up anything even vaguely relating to any forms of prejudice. They have encountered stupid people, morons by the score, and the rest of the folks that we all have to deal with, but I have never heard one tale of anyone having a problem because of their race.

Possibly others on here have had problems, or have issues of their own, but for the most part, as long as you present yourselves as professionals, there won't be anything to deal with that you are not already prepared for.

There are many flaws with trucking as an industry, but that seems to be one of the areas in which we are either even with, or possibly slightly ahead of the rest of the working world. My .02

Heck, trucking companies just want bodies behind the wheel. They don't care if you're purple with tentacles.
