I know I am new to all this but I have a few things to share, take it or leave it with my amount of experience.

    1) RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. ( I spent 6 months approx 3-4 hours a day on this forum before I made a decision.
    2) Go to truck stops and talk to drivers ask them how they like it.
    3) There are bad companies out there (Swift, Werner and some others) If you have done your research then you will be much happier in the long run.
    4) The company I am with there is no forced routing (you get there how ever you see fit) No ######## about idling (your hot? Idle. Your cold? Idle) Try that with some of the other bottom feeders. We don't drive anything older than 3 years.
    5) You will soon figure out most of the people that ##### about things other than missing their families are the ones that are sitting in the truck stops all the time not willing to work hard.

I decided on trucking because I am young, no wife, no kids, no house or apartment.

Well, I played 18 wheels of Steel- American Long Haul till 4am this morning. I think I might have passed a few of you out there. BTW, I started my own O/O company and edited the .cfg file and gave all my drivers the screen names of people I have met here. I also gave you all good loads and a good cpm.... it should be a good week, in fact take a few miles off if your close to home :)

Gonna meet up with the polar bear today on Extreme II :)

More seriously... I do appreciated everyones feedback and there are to many to address individually, but please know they are read and taken into consideration and much appericated. As I mentioned earlier I may not earn the name "driver" till a little later than planned, There has been no decision made either way, still in the RESEARCH phase. I will be continuing to hang out here on the forums. I am meeting with 2 different drivers today in my family. One of them is dropping close by and the other one is in for the weekend and is headed out later today, that doesn't happen often and they actually don't get along, so its ok :)

If I choose not to pursue this, I feel as I will always have the itch and will some day honestly regret not doing it, but for now I need to make sure I make a well informed decision. I didn't just wake up one day and go buy my BMW or my motorcycles, I researched them, thought about and then repeated that process and I did a lot of comparison shopping, in fact, I knew more about them when I went to purchase it , then the dealers did. I found out quickly salesmen don't like being corrected in their "facts". I have given myself a deadline to make a decision to drive or let it go for 12 months. My wife is still very supportive. Some people here did mention getting my CDL and looking for something regional or daily to do on the weekends and maybe that would scratch the itch. I may check into that further as a compromise to what I have and what I think I want.

Till then there are people to manage, end users to be supported and virtual environments to be taken care of. Another week of management bossing me around and college educated idiots telling me how to fix their computer when they barely know how to turn them on. Meetings about meetings about the TPN reports :)

    Be safe out there......

PS. To error is human, to blame it on someone else shows management potential

Like you; my wife and my situation is similar, we make more money, we’re older, but your words sound like the voices in me J. My job offers good benefits (which are less with Obamacare) plus a defined pension plan (which may stop in the companies BK) and our jobs are headed nowhere except maybe unemployment or forced early retirement.
Of course I’m looking at a career as team driving with my wife.

I know you where looking for help/advice, I can’t add anything but to say I can understand what your saying and what you mean. Thanks for posting it.

I hope more people reply, I’m learning a lot from this thread. I see some of the truckers talk about the ‘leash‘, but I like the boss watching, how else would he know I’m doing such a spectacular job.

    Ok...My $.02 here...

There are all good comments in this thread. I started one on here a few years ago. I bet it's still in the archives.
My situation is similar but not quite...

Got my CDL in 1989 and drove for awhile as a company driver for Roberts Express. Not sure if they are even around now.
I HATED IT. NO WAY I WOULD RETURN TO BEING A COMPANY DRIVER - ESPECIALLY TODAY.
They are treated like crap and I dont see much changing in that regard.

With that being said, I quit, moved and then got into the IT field. Been doing IT since 1992.
I make decent money and have been with my current employer for over 14yrs now.
I have over 5wks of vacation each year and decent health coverage.
Who in their right mind would give that up??

Well- I am sick of the IT crap, much like you. 100% in complete agreement that this routine of being on-call and never
really leaving work sucks. In fact I have been on-call 24/7/365 for the last 14yrs. I have no one to rotate with.
Plus, I work for a Hospital. WE NEVER CLOSE!

The thing I feel that is #1 to consider, is once you make this move, there really isn't any going back to IT..
IT changes very fast and unless your 100% current, and have certificates, companies won't be interested in hiring you.

So, think this through and thoroughly.

BTW, my mother flipped when I got my CDL and flipped again when I purchased my own rig 2yrs ago.
She felt I was 'wasting' my brain power in driving a rig..nevermind what I want to do in my life....

I worked on the service side of IT for a little more than 6 years. I can attest to the " I NEED (want) it fixed now" way things are.

Starting out until you get the hang of things your either going to be getting calls from dispatch or you'll be making them. And since your use to someone being up your ace 24/7 when you have to call you'll feel like your driving them crazy since you know the other side but once you and the company you work for find out you got it figured out they'll be more than happy leaving you be. Trust me they got tons of other calls coming and going as well.

I'd say do it. You only go round once and if I had to do it again I'd do it much sooner.
