I recently got my CDL, and today was orientation in Phoenix. Because of the holiday, I'll be heading out with a mentor tomorrow if all goes well. I have one major concern at this point, which is how I will pay my bills during training. I'm told that I can only set up direct deposit from a terminal, and I have to wait at least 24 hours after my driver code is assigned to do so. We are getting coded tomorrow, so by the time I am able to set up direct deposit, I'll be off with my mentor.
They gave me a Comdata card, but as far as I know, I can't use it to pay bills. Sure, I can pull money out of the ATM, but unless I find a Chase bank or ATM, I have no way to get cash into my account. The only other thing I can think of is to buy a prepaid card and/or money orders, but a prepaid card won't work for anything except the phone bill, and it makes me nervous to make loan payments through the mail due to the tight timing....
Any other ideas? The whole Comdata thing is new to me, so I'm hoping there is an easy answer to this dilemma that I'm just not familiar with.
Newbie wondering how to pay the bills....

Since you can do direct deposit, have it deposited to your regular checking account. Then get a debit card, problem solved. With the Comdata card, they control the money they pay you, at every step of the way.

If you have a smart phone w/camera, get the Chase App for deposits. You will fill out a comcheck, then call and register it. Now you take a pic of the front and back of the check and send it to Chase. Your deposit is done that quick. I also use bill pay thru Chase.
Alwaystheloosers and leaper Thank this. -
Ask your mentor to get you to a terminal so you can set up DD ASAP... Most places will let you pay bills early too. Pay them before you get out with a mentor.

when you call comdata thy will put cash in your account and on comdata card

Thanks everyone. Jigsaw, I hadn't thought of that, I've used the apps to deposit checks before, but I didn't think you could use comchecks that way! Daddytrucker- didn't know about that either. Things are looking up!
Im hoping I have a cool mentor that will run me by a terminal, but with all the horror stories, I didn't want to count on it. -
Try to set up dd before you head out. The 24 hour thing isn't absolute. I set mine up about 6 hours after I was coded. Avoid having any of your money put on the Comdata card. Why pay to access what's yours?
Frankleaper Thanks this. -
I agree. I was pretty disappointed when they said we wouldn't be able to set it up. I've been carrying my checkbook around with me since day one of academy waiting to do DD! Lol that gives me some hope, I'll try it out.

You still pay to use a debit card if you withdraw cash from an ATM.
Same difference.
And you should always have at least a couple hundred in cash. -
Why? I never carry more than $20 cash, unless you count the $15 of laundry quarters. As for ATM fee I withdraw at my bank while on hometime.
When does havin a couple hundred cash help us? Havent needed it so just curious.
