I seriously doubt that this is normal, maybe it's just a sign of the times and the desperate need for truckers, but a recruiter called me at work today, after I had chatted with a driver who was a customer in my store, about Fred's experiences with Swift. Apparently, the driver had gone straight back to his terminal that is just down the road and got the recruiter to call to ask me to get Fred to get in touch with him. Fred talked to them and they wanted him right now, even though he only has 6 months experience and their policy is usually 1 year. It made Fred feel special, but he doesn't want to leave Swift until he gets his full year in, which I think is a good idea for a number of reasons. It sure would be nice to have his home terminal practically in our back yard, though.
The recruiter called me??

I have done a little more digging. Turns out Southern Cal was recently purchased by Transport America. I can't find a whole lot of info about satisfied or dissatisfied drivers with Transport America. I did find out that their drivers get a $500 bonus for helping them recruit other drivers, which explains why that driver was in such a hurry to get back to the terminal with Fred's info. If you all know anything about Transport America, let me know. As of right now, and with the number of trucking companies in Birmingham, Alabama, I believe Fred can do better after he gets through his year with Swift.
Edit: One of the things that did catch my attention was that the driver I was talking to said that the minimum he would ever get paid on a load was $60. Beats the heck out of that $2.32 that Fred got paid by Swift for the 8 mile run that took 4 hours in Atlanta. -
I drove for Transport America a while back, and can say they are a decent outfit to work for. They try to keep thier drivers busy, and do stand by their hometime policy. With you being that close to a terminal, Fred will actually be able to get home every weekend if he so desires. The downside, of course, is that he'll only be home for a 34, instead of getting a few days off. But if stays out two weeks, like I did, he'll get two full days of hometime out of the truck.
I don't know about your terminal, but the North Jackson, OH and Mechanicsville, PA terminals had fairly decent shops that tried to get to your rig as soon as they could. All shops run on a first-come-first served basis, but Transport America's trucks were well-maintained so the wait usually wasn't too long.
The down side is that Transport America is super ultra strict about what they consider to be an accident. At least the safety jerk in N. Jackson is. And some of the freight is real tight on time, particularly the Fed-Ex loads, which TA will "pony express" across two trucks if they can't get a team truck in place.
If Fred does make the jump to TA (which overall, I'd reccommend), see if he can get on Sarah Lindquist's board (if she's even still there). Sarah was my fleet manager, and if she could put up with my bull excrement and still keep me busy, I'm sure Fred will have no problems.Wilma Thanks this.
