I think so. I use to be under contract until 2008. Then I started using prepaid. It makes more sense in many ways.
Here's an excellent article covering the pros and cons.

My wife and I have phones from Boost (Sprint) . Coverage is excellent in most areas . They have a shrinkage plan where they reduce your monthly charges by $5 a month after 6 on time payments . I think they do it 3 times so your payment is $15 a month than less than what you started with .
They also deduct the payment the same day every month . If your payment date is the 15th and you send payment the 12th they don't deduct it until the 15th . Other plans would start a new month the 12th and cheat you out of days.
You can trade and upgrade your phone and still keep the shrinkage credits -
I have a net10 Droid......50 bucks a month unlimited everything. YouTube, Facebook, Truckers Report, whatever. Only downside is you can't tether its internet connection to your laptop. I love it.

Well I don't have a "smart phone." (I'm probably not "smart enough" to use one if I had it.) But my wife and I are both with Verizon. Our contracts expired about two years ago, and we have been on month to month ever since. Of course if either of our phones takes a dump, then we will have to do something else.
One of my kids is on a prepaid plan. It is the only phone she has, and she loves it. Of course she does little in the way of travel so doesn't use it out of her immediate calling area very much. -
Pre paid phones are the way too go as far as monthly pricing

Just went prepaid with Straight Talk phone/ text/ data.( walmart/trac phone cooperative ). Went online to set up and activate. Done. Called to change to current phone number with the following nightmare. They had to deactivate my phone. I lost my brand new unused $45 30 day card. the process voided it. Said they would send me a new sim card. 3 to 5 business days. Well I'm going out tomorrow for two weeks. Now my old account has to be kept current. This will overlap a billing cycle so I have to pay another month with that carrier.
So clearly their online system is glitched. If you are going to use them; CALL them.
