Ok here is the situation I'm in. I drove a truck for 12 years for a large local company, then the company shut down. For the last 2 years I have been driving a truck a few days a week as the company needed me. This was an off the books job that kept me afloat thank god. Anyway now I had two great interviews with a company I REALLY want to work for. I think they may start a background check this week. My boss of the "off the books" job said he would take the call but only give dates of employment, position held and that I am a reliable employee. #1 is that enough? I was told it is but now someone told me that past CDL jobs have to reveal all DOT physicals dates and drug test dates and results. Is that true because my boss was adamant about what he would say and nothing more? Also its a small company I don't think he even has the dates of DOT physicals and drug tests? Thanks for the help.

all you can do is hope now. some companies are stricter then others
if you have an up to date med card you should know date issued or just bite the bullet and go get a new one
per usual we are our own worse enemies it isn't rocket science to figure out how to put yourself in the best position to become employable
I was 57 weighed 380 lbs when I found myself unemployed going thru a bankruptcy after owning my own buisness for 38 years
I couldn't change being 57 but I could change my weight
lap band surgery and 140 lbs at least allowed me not to waddle into interviews -
Potential employers are required to send inquiries to past employers. Past employers are not required to respond and many don't

Thanks guys i appreciate the help. I was more wondering if it was law or DOT rule that your current employer has to give dates and results from all DOT physicals and drug tests. I'm healthy and have NEVER touched an illegal drug in my life, but am just worried because I work for a VERY small operation, 3 employees. I guess I'll just wait an see.

Subpart D - Handling of test results, records retention, and confidentiality
§ 382.413Inquiries for alcohol and controlled substances information from previous employers.
Employers shall request alcohol and controlled substances information from previous employers in accordance with the requirements of § 40.25 of this title.
Here's the form . This requirement went into effect February 29 http://wap.yahoo.com/w/search/;_ylt...it=oneSearch&n=10&stype=web&sf=5&.tsrc=rim_US.
I was wrong in my previous post . The former employer MUST respond
QUESTION:
When an employer is inquiring about an applicant's previous DOT drug and alcohol test
results, is the employer required to send the inquiry via certified mail?
ANSWER:
No. Certified mail is not required.
The employer can make this inquiry through a variety of means, including mail
(certified or not), fax, telephone, or email.
However, the employer must provide the former employer the signed release or a
faxed or scanned copy of the employee's signed release.
The former employer must respond via a written response (e.g., fax, letter, email)
that ensures confidentiality.
The employer should document an attempt or attempts to contact and contacts
with previous employers, no matter how they were made, so that it can show a
good faith effort to obtain the required information. -
Thanks for the help. They either take him at his word or not and then I'm either ok or screwed. I guess they may not request the info at all. If I went to get a DOT exam today or tomorrow on my own would that mitigate some of these issues? Thanks
-
The company you were with for the 12 years obviously wont respond if they no longer exist. We still get a request once in a while at the family business we shut down which also was/is my parents address. Since the business no longer exists my parents just toss the request.
-
Yeah the company I worked for 12 years doesn't exist but the parent company is still alive. We were a subsidiary of a large corporation. Who know what the new company will want. Anyway I was expecting the call today anyway but, nothing so I'm a bit nervous now. Maybe I won't have to sweat out this stuff in the end anyway. Thanks for the replies.

The three years of drug and alcohol information is regarding 1- did you ever refuse a test, 2- did any of your previous employers indicate you violated any drug/alcohol regs, 3- if you DID test positive/refuse did you go toa SAP and get cleared to return to work...
99.999999999999999% of the time the answers will be no. If you have no drug and alcohol skeltons in your closet you have nothing to worry about.wastetrucks Thanks this. -
Thank you wis bang, I have never taken an illegal drug in my life, not even pot so i am not worried about any of that. If its just my boss having to confirm that I am great but if they need some kind of documents that might be a problem for my current employer. I thought they might need some sort of signed document from the DOT and my boss. Thanks for the help.
I am a bit worried overall here, because I haven't heard anything back from the company. I had such a GREAT interview, I drove a very similar truck as what they use. I am safe, never had an accident in my personal vehicle or a company vehicle. I have never had a ticket either. I want this job so bad. I should mention its a waste company, garbage trucks. Not easy but its local with a nice salary. Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it.
