I just graduated from john tyler trucking school in chester va in march,I was having trouble just like alot of other drivers trying to find a local company,so I decided to go with western.I am already worried about going since I was suppose to go yesterday at 7am but greyhound had screwed up my ticket,so I spoke to amber and she got it fixed for me,but I want to know how do this work,I have a up to date medical card,do they make you take another physical? what kind of paperwork do you have to do? when you go out with your trainer, when do he make you drive, and they told me to pack 2 weeks worth of clothing,so do that mean I go home after the 2 weeks and come back or do I get to wash my clothes on the rd?
I am on my way to nashville for orientation tomorrow, need some info please

i never worked for them but they,ll seend you for adrug test and another physical.don,t know about paperwork. you most likely will drive differant hours depending how the trip is planned. gives you better experience while with trainer. you,ll most like likely have to wash clothes depending on how long your training goes. don,t expect to be home while training unless your trainer takes time off and you,re near you house. good luck and be safe

Thank you,I am worried I might of forgot how to shift, its been 4 months since I graduated, what do they look for when you are doing the driver test?
-
They are largely looking to see if you can be taught. The road test is not that hard. Take a deep breath and relax, it will improve your driving.
As far as western express goes, it generally feels like two different companies. You got dry van on one side, and flatbed on the other. Do yourself a favor and go to flatbed. Generally get treated better than dry van, and it's easier to find a decent job when you run screaming into the night away from western express. They are a training company, nothing more. -
Thank you brsims,I already told them I wanted to work with dry vans,to late I guess

It's not to late as long as they have flat bed in your area. I am a former employee and am heading back on Saturday for orientation. Training is exactly that training. Make sure your comfortable before you go solo. Laundry is don't on the road. Don't plan on seeing home for at least three weeks. If your a smoker you will get a trainer sooner than non smoke, so if ya dont mind second hand go with a smoker. First day is all paperwork, second is piss test and phisical. Hope you have some cash with ya for while your on the road with your trainer. They hold first weeks check. But you can do advances once your with trainer. I would suggest against this. Because you will just put your self in a hole. Good luck and I'll prolly see ya around.
smoothheem Thanks this. -
Thank you jesse, what kind of paper work do they give you that takes all day? and which one is better, van or flat?
-
I'm a flatbeder or will be again. It's more close knit, and in my opinion the people are more apt to help ya out. Well they have to set up pay, check background, check employment history, copy's of social and drivers licence, and so on. And ya gotta figure there will prolly be ten or fifteen guys so all that takes time. If this is your first truckin job take it as slow as possible and learn as much as ya can. That's another reason I'd say go flat bed the training is more in depth and your not just a wheel holder you are forced to check equipment. Plus when your on the road ya get more respect asspecialy if ya do a good job on tarps and such. Either way good luck. Oh and don't let some guys horror storys scare ya or there story's of failure. Life is what YOU make it. If you have more questions feel free to ask I check in every day.
smoothheem Thanks this. -
As far as your initial driveing test. Don't worry and take it slow.
